I waited because we went on a cruise that stopped in Canada and said we may need our passports. Well I am sure everyone knows now how long it takes to get a new passport. Anyways, where do I go now to change my name? The same office we got the license? Thanks in advance...

It is a pain to change your name. I've been married just over a year and haven't changed it everywhere yet. Not only do you need to go to social security and dmv but you have to call all the company's you do business with like your credit cards, phone, cell phone, frequent flier cards, professional licenses, magazines, insurance ... the list goes on and on. Many of these places want a copy of your marriage license to make the change especially the insurance companies and banks. Some will do the change over the phone but not many. I just waited until magazines subscriptions expired and renewed with my new name. I actually kept my passport with my old name on it and have a drivers license with my new name just so I have ID to match. Eventually I will get a new passport. You can go to:

www.ssa.gov/online/ss-5.html

to download the application for a new card, it's much easier to have all the paperwork done before going and have all the ID because the ss office is not the most fun place to spend an afternoon. Same with the dmv, download the paperwork from your states dmv website it'll tell you what to bring and how much it'll cost. Good luck.

Well, you should have your marriage license showing who you married. Now just take that document to the Social Security Office and the Driver License office. That will get you started. Then you will need to notify all your contacts, including employer, insurance, creditors and whomever else you want to know.

But you need the Social Security Office and Driver LIcense for ID purposes. Then you can change your passport.

You just need to take a copy of your birth certificate to prove you are who are say you are, and then a copy of your wedding certificate, signed to the social security office. Depending on your state, call your local DMV and ask what the requirements are. In some states you need to change your SS card before your drivers license, in some it's the other way around, and in some they just don't care. Once that's done, you can contact your credit card company's, the bank, and make all the changes there.

Take your marriage certificate to Social Security first off. Once you get the signed piece of paper indicating your name has been changed, take that to the DMV along with your certificate and get a new license. After that, call up all your utilities, credit cards, banks, etc. and find out their procedures for changing your name.

It takes time but it's a lot easier than wasting money on a name change kit. You can do it all on your own with a little research and effort.

If you live in the U.S., that office can probably provide you with the contacts you will need... ours gave us a packet with all of the departments to contact - usually at least the Social Security Office and state records office.

Make sure you send back the 'change of address' or 'name change' forms for all of your credit cards and bills as well.

What you need to do is find your local Social Security office and contact them to see what exactly you need to take with you. (If I can recall - I believe it's your drivers license, copy of your marriage certificate, & possibly birth certificate) You'll have to make name change on Social first, before you can do anything else. Once you receive your new card with your 'new name' then you can makes changes with DMV - THEN after that's done, you'll be able to change everything else. (banking, bills, credit cards, etc...) I hope this helps & congratulations on your marriage.
