Depends on your loan agreement. Most loans don't expect payments to start until 6 months after you graduate, IF you stay in school for consecutive semesters.

If you take a year off then you will need to start paying off your loans.

I just graduated in may and my first payment isn't due until January 1, 2008.
Though the interest is piling up at about $3 a day.

It shouldn't affect your credit score until you start paying it(and even then as long as you're making sufficient payments, it won't negatively affect it)

They start becoming due 6 months after you leave school, if you find yourself in a position as not being able to repay them at that time, you can ask for a forbearance, in which the loans still accumulate interest but the payments are for the most part suspended, and do not show up on your report

derogatory things stay on your credit report for 7 years from the date of last activity

as for Student Loans?
they go on your report when you start repaying them
My Son is repaying the interest every month until he graduates
so they are on his report already as good credit

Continue to pay on time and credit score will slowly improve and rise
