Absolutely not!
The Talmud, New Testament, Quran are all history books.
Sorry, but true.
Sure they may still contain grains of truth when dealing with morals and how we conduct our lives (even for furthering the religion) but for the rest they are worthless.
This is because the thinking back then was primitive, nothing to do with science at all, unfortunately.
(I mean the Bible actually talks about there being real dragons!)
For science stick with the most upto date VERIFIABLE EVIDENCE, for the rest stay with the holy books.

Anyway, isn't Sharia a sort of illegitimate offshoot, not actually connnected with the words of the Prophet (pbuh) at all, simply the distorted views of some also rans who came after?

No you shouldn't. Sharia law takes away people's basic right to freedom of expression. It is also pretty brutal, and should be seen as a backward step in to the dark ages by any half decent human being.
My views are the same on any fundamentalist man-made moral/religious doctrines. They are all bad.

In my humble and uneducated opinion Sharia Law is an insult to every woman that lives on this planet

Sharia is a very strict rule of life. It will to a large extent separate you from your friends and general society. You will be required to disapprove of many of the things your friends and neighbors do. You will be required to feel superior to all your non-Sharia acquaintances. If this is what you want, go for it.

I think you should do what serves your best interests and not adhere too stringently to religion. Also, be weary that matters of religion are contentious...especially as we have one too many muslims forcing their religion down our throats in this country...please dont contribute to the already developing stigma.
