And the Crusades, Inquisition, and suicide bombings were good things?
And Hitler was not an atheist, nor was he Christian--he was an occultist.
EDIT: Skalite, yes, Himmler was an occultist, but Hitler was as well. Himmler was definitely the driving force behind Nazi occultism. Hitler pretended to be Christian, as he admitted the masses were too stupid to understand anything else.

Hitler practiced a form of Christianity that would be tantamount to the type of islam that causes people to blow themselves up. Whoever said he was Catholic needs to go back to highschool and re-take history 101. Stalin and Pol Pot were atheists.
In any case, I don't think you can use someone's personal views of an ideology to condemn the entire ideology. Obviously Hitler did not represent true christianity, and although I don't think atheism is the best thing ever, I don't believe it had anything to do with Stalin and Pol Pot's craziness.
I think your frustration lies in the fact that atheists constantly use those arguments against theists. If I were you I would do my best to ingore them because those types of arguments are baseless.
edit: I went back to read some of the other posts and it turns out that a lot of atheists are hypocrites too. All the more reason to to pay attention to them. Just read curious_compound's responses, he's one of the biggest hypocrites on R&S, on second thought, better not to read what he writes.

Please try to understand what you're arguing.
Hitler wasn't atheist, he was raised catholic and was simply non-religious at the time of his death. His political position was Nationalist and he was very fundimental about this (obviously). Not to mention he was a nutjob who wanted a supreme race to rule the world. None of this was based on his atheism.
As for Stalin and Pol Pot, they were both Communist dictators. Their atheism had nothing to do with the attrocities they committed.
China and the Soviet Union, again, Communism. While it does seem to work, it's still a dictatorship and absolutely nothing to do with atheism. Yes, atheism is enforced but it is merely a part of the Communist regime. This is like saying that the Spanish Inquisition is a good representation of Christians.

Disagree
Hitler was Catholic.
Stalin and Pol Pot did what they did for power and because they were paranoid, not for religion.
Look at the crusades, look at the inquisition. Both done in the name of Christianity. 9/11 done in the name of Islam. Vlad the Impaler performed atrocities in the name of religion.
Look at all the death, infanticide, genocide etc. in the Old Testament, done by God or at his direct request.
Northern Ireland, the Balkans, Cyprus, Israel and the Middle East, Dafur, Pakistan and India. For all these conflicts religion has played a key, if not the prime role.
You do not need religion in society at all. What you need is fairness and equality. (Not Communist everyone must be equally poor, but capitalistic everyone has equal opportunity.)

as has already been metion4ed here sevral times, hitler considered himself a catholic, it was in his autobiograophy after all. He also had close realations with the catholic church, i mean, that anti-semitism had to come from somehwere, and the catholic church at that time had been the well-spring for hatred of jews for centuries prior to the holocaust. Look into the blood-libel and the charge of deicide leveled against the jews by the catholic church.
stalin had an orthodox christian upbrining, and at the time of his takeover the russian people were very much superstitious, if he didnt work closely with the church in his nation hjis regieme would have in no way been successful.
his notions of dogmatic devotion to his ideals came directly from relgion, all he did was change around the names.
It comes down to this, whether you want to believe it or not, without religion, you would have good people doing good things, and bad people doing bad things, but to get good peopel to do bad things, you need religion.
that is the legacy of gods on this earth. No society has ever warred, or crumbled or torn itself apart because it had become too reasonable.
Atheists only want reason and thought, not sick devotion to cruel gods.

Nope. Disagree.
Atheists didn't burn witches at the stake, or engage in the Crusades that killed thousands. (Note that I'm not saying *all* religious people commit such atrocities.)
Stalin and Pol Lot didn't kill people in the name of atheism. They killed in the name of a murderous political ideology.
Hitler was (allegedly) a Christian.
Religion *can* be a good influence on a society, but it can also be an oppressive influence. Just look at the Middle East.

Again, John, again you disappoint me. You know as well as anyone here knows, that Pol Pot, Hitler (a good Catholic fellow), and Stalin did not commit crimes against humanity BECAUSE they were atheists but because they were psychopaths. Unlike the Christian Crusades, etc., they did not murder the innocent for the sake of their god.

First off when Hitler started in the Nazi party he thought of him self as a Christian so in that you all are right but at the end of the third riech's reign, just before he killed himself, he had started to use the occoult to further his goal as he saw he was loosing the war with the concept of "God" and choose something similar to the old Norse belifes Germany had before christians arrived.

That's not a very good argument, and not correct either. George Bush is using religion to rape America right now, just like Hitler used God in his crusade. Religion makes people weak minded. We need critical thinkers who have a grasp on morality, not sheep who are regularly instructed what the morality of the day should be.

China is rapidly becoming the number one world economic power or maybe second to India.
Communism or socialism was a common practice of first century Christians.
And no, you don't need religion in a society, but you need a respect for human rights, and tolerance for differences.
