I can choose one path, which leads to my suffering the just consequences of my actions, eternity in hell. Or, I can choose the second, which means that I get off scott free.

I take it you're suggesting that I choose the first path, but it seems to me that that would make me quite a weasel, don't you agree? Wouldn't you call a confessed murderer who asks the court to let him off scott free a weasel, or worse?

I mean to say, choose the second path, obviously.

Absolutely not... weasle is NOT the term I would use at all. If you were to choose the second path, you would be honestly asking for forgiveness. If it's true in your heart and you're willing to live that way, it's not at all "weasely". If a murderer were to request forgiveness and truely mean it, they're not necessarily asking to get off scott-free. Our justice system requires that person to serve out their term regardless. But God's justice system is beyond our understanding. I'm just thankful I have the option.

That's not the way I'd put it. If you choose path one, you suffer the consequences of your actions...you will die and go to hell (whatever that means). If you choose path two, you have to accept that someone else paid the fine for your mistakes.

If a person confesses to murder and cooperates fully with the investigation so the surviving family can have whatever measure of peace comes from knowing why their loved one died, is that person a weasel if he throws himself on the mercy of the court and requests prison instead of the death penalty?

If I paid the fine so that someone I loved didn't have to go to jail, is that person a weasel? I'd say no...unless he or she isn't the slightest bit grateful for my sacrifice.

If you choose path 2, you don't get off scott free and you aren't a weasel...you have to live with the knowledge that God's own son paid the fine for your mistakes with his life. You WILL still pay the earthly price for all of your mistakes and God's not going to give you any kind of reward in his kingdom for any of those mistakes...that's the "prison sentence" you exchange for the "death penalty" when you accept God's "plea bargain". If we confess to our mistakes and throw ourselves on the mercy of the court, we don't get the maximum sentence...the only thing left to avoid "weasel" status is to express gratitude for the life we've been given!

You're missing the point of the story, my friend. It isn't about getting off scott free. It's about receiving the gift of eternity, and in exchange for that you return the favor by living a life that God would be pleased with.

Saving grace gets you into heaven, and if the confessed murderer is truly repentant in his actions, why doesn't he deserve life with God?

Ultimately God will judge us based on our actions. But he doesn't judge us on what we do before we are saved. He judges us on what we do afterward.

Take care.
