I really would like to start washing my hair only about once a week. Even if I only do this once a month or so, I really need my hair to balance out! My scalp is slightly itchy and prone to dandruff, so I use head and shoulders. But my ends are really dry! I've heard the natural oils in your hair are really the best "conditioner". I have friends who don't wash their hair more than once a week and they say it works so well! My scalp gets itchy and oily on day 2 though. Does anyone have tips to last a week without washing your hair...and still have it look ok? I have to wear my hair back for work everyday, if that makes a difference.

I'd say you could still wet your hair without washing it to help, and it won't wash out the oil (oil/water don't mix) Try some baby powder. Sprinkle some into your palm and work through your hair to absorb some of the oil on the scalp when your hair is dry. Brush your hair often throughout the day to distribute the oil to the ends of your hair.

Don't use much product, if any. A little gel right after you wash your hair is ok, but nothing greasy or oily. Also, don't use a heavy conditioner when you wash your hair if you plan not to wash again for a week.

My hair is a lot like your sounds. You said you use Head & Shoulders, but give Head & Shoulders Dry Scalp a try. I kept getting dandruff and using stronger and stronger dandruff shampoos and it just kept getting worse. I switched to Dry Scalp and haven't had a problem since.

Also, some people's scalps don't react well to some styling products, since you'll be using less in your week-long experiment, you might see a difference there. Instead of dandruff, it might be a type of excema.

Ew your friends must have super greasy hair at the end of the week.

I can't go 2 days without washing mine!

I heard that the best thing to do is this:

- Wash hair with Head&Shoulders shampoo and conditioner but don't massage the hair because it stimulates the scalp to produce more oil.

- 2 days later, wet all your hair in the shower and *don't* use shampoo. Only apply conditioner on the bottom part of your hair (NOT roots or scalp). Rinse conditioner off after 5-10 minutes.

- 3 days after that, go back to the top and follow instructions again.

It is getting past day 2, day 3 is itchy too, but not as bothersome. And it does not always get itchy(could be due to the fact that the scalp is no longer producing as much dry scalp.(so no dandruff)
It is a matter of toughin' it out.

I then wash it with a low price no name shampoo followed by a conditioner. No other chemicals. Keeps it for another 4-5 days(I guess it is that long....it is not a daily thing, that's all I know)

I have a dandruff control treatment you could use
for a oily, flaky scalp
2 TBSP Apple Cider Venegar or fresh lemon juice
2 TBSP distilled water
2 TBSP olive oil
Mix together all ingredinets and massage into your scalp. Leave on for 20 minutes before shampooing
for a dry, flaky scalp
2TBSP jojoba oil
1/4 tsp tea tree oil
combine the 2 oils and massage into wet hair, leaveon for 10 minutes then shampoo out.

Brush your hair everyday for 2 minutes, also you may need protein so try a protein pack, you can find those at Sally's.

Actually I have been in a similar situation where I could not wash my hair for a few weeks. The number one thing to remember is to do not touch your hair with your hands. Touching your hair makes it greasy, and get the look of being dirty a lot faster. One thing that I did was keep my hair braided down my back, that kept it looking clean and fresh. If your hair does starting getting a little oily looking then take a hair dryer, flip your hair over and use the heat to provide fullness to it. The fuller your hair the less dirty it will look. I do not think for two weeks you should really have a problem. Hope things work out for you!

My suggestion would be to prepare your scalp before you stop washing your hair daily and by that I meant to stop using H&S as it is full of chemicals and clogs the pours. You should purchase an all natural hair shampoo, from a health food store; wash your hair a few times and then try to go 2-3 days without washing, then 4-5, then up to a week between washings. Brushing your hair with an all natural bush and keeping the hair tied helps the hair from picking up airborne dirt and polutants.

If you have oily hair going a week may be a little much. I try and wash my hair about every 3-4 days. I actually find that on day 3/4 my hair does better.
