Not christian but have experienced spirits. When I was young any of them scared me. It was the surprise of seeing them or feeling them. As I got older I became more curious. That's when I started searching my feelings when I'd see or feel one. I'd ask myself if I felt afraid because it surprised me or if it was because I got a bad feeling from it.
It has really come to the point where I've realize for the most part I've never felt a bad spirit. The thing is what we think is bad or evil may not be to them. Say they had owned the property and loved the place. They died and still have an attachment to the place. They may see you as an intruder. In that way they may want you to leave but don't understand you aren't doing bad or evil to them.
Now there is the sleep paralyzed thing too. I know a couple of people who have experienced this.
Now if you really believe it's a spirit and you are afraid of it. Just say In God's name leave. Say it three times. That is what my grandmother swore by. If you are a Catholic you can call on the Arch Angel Michael for protection. Call on him and he will be there.

There is no such thing as spirits, evil or otherwise. It's simply a combination of your semiconsious mind playing tricks and sleep paralysis.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypnagogia
(Excerpt)
Hypnagogia (also spelled hypnogogia) describes vivid dreamlike auditory, visual, or tactile sensations, which are often accompanied by sleep paralysis and experienced when falling asleep or waking up.
The hypnagogic experience occurs between being awake and asleep, while the hypnopompic experience occurs as one is waking up; both experiences occur within the time period between sleep and waking (or vice versa). Experienced qualities vary, and include fear, awareness of a "presence", chest or back pressure, and an inability to breathe (hence the folkloric notion of mara-like creatures tormenting sleepers), a falling sensation or a feeling of tripping, but sometimes also joy.
During the hypnagogic state, an individual may appear to be fully awake, but has brain waves indicating that the individual is technically sleeping. Also, the individual may be completely aware of their state, which enables lucid dreamers to enter the dream state consciously directly from the waking state (see wake-initiated lucid dream technique).
The hypnagogic state is sometimes proposed as an explanation of experiences such as alien abduction, apparitions, or visions.

I am a Christian.
I have not experienced this but know several creditable people who have described this exact feeling.
My suggestion is simply to ask the Holy Spirit to reveal what this is to you and what message is God trying to send you.
If you are certain this is an "evil" spirit, pray over your bed and your bedroom and simply command the evil spirit to leave in the name of Jesus Christ. Remember though its not your authority your claiming its Jesus' authority.
You don't need to be a pastor/minister/priest/deacon to do this.

Yes, I have experienced this, and I was fearful at first but then I remembered the word of God saying that demons tremble at the name of Jesus, so I called on Jesus and the spirit left. What I don't understand is why it was there. There are so many things I want to ask God when it's time. He said his ways are not our ways and his thoughts are not our thoughts so all I can do is continue to put my trust in God, he has never failed me.

this is sleep paralysis sweetie
what happens is our body prepares for dream sleep and releases a hormone in our body
this is to prevent us from acting out our dreams during sleep , so that we do not injure our self
it paralyses us from the neck down ... except our head , toes and genitals
this is often accompanied by something called hypnagogic state which to put it simply is like a waking dream
when you are aware of all this happening , it means the hormone has been released too soon or you have woken during it
it is nothing to worry about , although it is terribly scary if you aren't aware of what is happening

This is a scientifically proven event that can occur while your mind is waking up from sleep.
Not evil spirits, not good spirits, not leprechauns, not sprites.
Just a natural occurrence in your mind as it fires ups the synapses needed to get awake.

Try doing an Internet search for Night terrors or sleep paralysis.
It is a recognized sleep disorder, while it is frightening it is also perfectly explainable. Try talking to your Doctor.

I'm not sure Christians have effective mechanisms in place to deal with what you are talking about. Know of any American Indian medicine people?
