Well all trout are in the Salmonoid family and we call some of them trout, even though they are char.

Appalachain Brook Trout. is the only true native trout in the eastern US . They are considered a char not a trout.

Rainbow , Cutthroat, Golden trout and a couple others are natives in the western US. They are in the Salmonoid family

dang! i saw a show on that just a week or so ago and can't remember what they said. i believe they said a trout has no scales. since they said a brook trout is actually a char and i believe brown trout have scales i'll go with a rainbow trout (i don't know much about cut throats, though).
