The same way that uneducated, savage, indigenous peoples have been kept in line since the beginning, and are still today--by any one of the zillion other belief systems the world has known.

They were killed.

You're talking about a time when people had to travel poorly crafted roads with whatever basic weapons they could afford. Anyone who posed a threat, or anyone who was different, would be hunted down and killed. Or chased off if they managed to escape.

Also, just because Christianity didn't exist yet doesn't mean people weren't spiritual. People conducted all sorts of nasty stuff in the name of their gods, like human sacrifices, long before Christianity came around.

They weren't. That's why Sodom and Gomorrah was destroyed. That's why God gave Moses the ten commandments to live by. That's why God sent his Son to save us from our sinful ways! Sadly there are still many uneducated, savage indigenous people in the world that refuse this precious gift! :o)

You mean after Jesus Christ established His church? Even before He did, there has always been laws, and there are laws today. That doesn't mean everyone will follow those laws, whether they have Jesus in their lives or not. Look at the prison over-population. People have to choose whether to follow Christ or not.

Well...they had some weird and demonic practices...up to and including the sacrifice of their own newborn babies to their "evil false gods". Plus the remainder of their immoral behavior resulted in plagues, diseases venereal etc., insanity ( eating the flesh of deceased relations) and early death.
