Because most Christians put God first. The things of the world are necessary for life, but loving the things of the world more than God is not what God wants.

I have the New American Standard bible and it translates the original Hebrew and Greek a tad clearer.
I John 2:15 Do not love the world, nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
Reference also Romans 12:2 Do not be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.
Simple English: You cannot serve two masters. Is your heart set on worldly things that rust, ruin and deteriorate; or God's will for your life? Do not get tangled up in worldly things, but put God first in your life and obey His word.
Hope this helps.

Prosperity religion is another false religion being taught. Satan is the ruler of this world and that is the world we are not to love. There is nothing wrong with praying for money to meet your needs or a job or a better job. Jesus said to seek first the kingdom of God and these other things will be added to you. In the USA we've never lived under a king or queen and we are not familiar. A king owns everything and supplies every need to his people. That is a good king. As Christians we worship a good King.

Matthew 6:33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things shall be added to you. The promise of God in this passage of Scripture is clear if we seek God's kigdom and His righteousness our success on earth will be a by-product of our intimate relationship with God. Christians are to avoid the ways of the world define in 1 John 2:16 as the lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes and the pride of life. The Christian's earthly possessions must not become his idol. God wants Christian to prosper and be in health in 3 John 2.

Good point. What you describe is more materialism. Praying for God's provision is fine, but there is a line that can be crossed.
The world can be also understood to mean the ways of the world, the philosophies. It does go on to say Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world.

1 Tim. 6:10, For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. You are definitely on track, alot of Christians are in love with money like the rest of the world, if God does give you money it is to be used for his Glory. Obviously the good Lord does not want his children be to poor, blind and naked. He wants them to live comfortably, but alreadys be ready and willing to help out a neighbor in time of need. The Bible says that were your treasure is, there your heart will be also. We need to make sure our treasure is Jesus Christ. Feel free to email me about my response if you like.

Money is not a bad or good thing. It is a tool, a means to an end.
The Bible encourages people to do the best with what they have. Making a profit is not bad. In fact, if one is successful, one is better equipped to help others, and at very least is not a burden on their communities.
Jesus also said to love God with all your heart, mind, soul, and strength. I belive this includes intellectual and professional development (mind and strength).
Love, Jack

The principles are that God will bless us, if we are faithful with what he gives us. Our money comes from Him and belongs to Him, so we are to give a portion of it back to Him for use in helping others. Also the verse says that the love of money is the root of all evil, not money itself. This simply means that we ought to keep money in it's proper place, ie not more important to us than God, from whom our real security comes. God doesn't mind us having possessions as long as our hearts are turned to Him.

Christians like anyone else want to support their families the best way that they can. Sometimes the "way of the world" gets in the way though. It depends on what is really in a person's heart as to how much they really adhere to that kind of thinking however. They are the only ones that really know what it means to them.
