Let us look at this question in the purview of evolution as I remembered and understood it from university and my readings of current discoveries in evolution.
Billions of years ago the first glimmer of life appeared on earth caused by a mystical interaction of matter and energy. During the eons single cells evolved into more complex organism which became plants and animals until the flowering of the dinosaurs as the dominant form of life. By some fluke of nature some dinosaurs evolve into birdlike creature which in turn became true birds as we know them today.
One day one of these birds laid an egg. The egg is unique because the pulsing life within it developed into a different breed than the parents. A chicken was hatched from it, or at least the very first of the chicken as we know now.
The mother and the father were not chicken but out of the egg a chicken came out.
Therefore, the egg came first.

Drop an egg before it is hatched...and one sees death...
Drop a chicken and it does not die.
One is depend ant on the other...
The egg requires the chicken...the chicken creates the egg.
But, I would suppose it would not be a chicken or an egg that was first, but a precursor to both, that evolved and set up the cycle that eventually became a chicken and and egg. NV the ancient one

Logically, the first chicken must have been born from an egg not of a chicken. Therefore I answer 'the egg'.

Shelled eggs evolved in reptiles long before reptiles evolved into birds. Therefore eggs came first. If you specifically mean chicken eggs, then obviously chickens and chicken eggs evolved simultaneously.
