I've never had surgery before and I'm going to have surgery on my wrist in two weeks. I assume I will have to take my clothes off and wear a gown, but will they make me take my underwear and sports bra off too? If they say it is optional or if I have to keep my bra on, do they still make you wear a gown?? The way I look at it is if my sports bra is on, then I got nothin' to hide....so I would rather not wear the gown if my sports bra is on...do you think they will allow that?? Most of the time at home I'm in just my sports bra anyway, so for me it's no big deal (if I have my sports bra on). Thanks in advance!

OK Here's the scoop. All surgeries carry risk to them. And while you're having surgery on your wrist, and it would seem logical that you wouldn't necessarily have to be in the nude for such a procedure; they want to be prepared - just on the absolutely most remote circumstances.

Additionally, an operating room is a sterile environment and they want to be as sure as possible that you aren't harboring any bacteria etc. that could cause an infection. Your own undies are not sterile and they do harbor bacteria, that given half a chance, will spread like wildfire.

So they will probably ask you to strip naked and put on a surgical gown. Then they will cover you with sterile drapes. you'll be covered. I promise.

Honey, these hard-working folks are NOT interested in you sexually, nor do they care about your breasts/bottom. They are interested in your wrist - and the procedures they have to conduct to correct whatever is wrong with your wrist.

You don't have to feel exposed, unsafe, etc.

Depending on the surgery on your wrist, you may just get to wear your own clothes..

If it's a more serious surgery on your wrist.. then I'm sure the nurses will let you wear a sports bra under your gown.. that shouldn't be an issue.

I had my first surgery (a C-Section) back in January.. and I was similarly nervous like you.. and in my case I wasn't allowed to wear a bra, but they also were very considerate in covering my breasts, and my private area.. so just my belly was out.. and they delivered the baby.

Most medical facilities are very sensative about those sorts of issues.. so you should be fine. If your really nervous.. call the medical facility in advance and ask... that will at least put your mind at ease.

OK, I'm in the US. I've had 4 outpatient surgeries with twilight sleep in an outpatient facility--not a hospital--not a doctor's office. Both feet rebuilt, and two hand surgeries. I was allowed to keep my undies on but had to wear a gown. Open in the front because there were monitors on my chest and back.

I have had three hospital procedures that were outpatient surgeries---same thing, but they let me wear socks also.

Two surgeries--shoulder replacements--out in 24 hours, and was allowed to wear undies and socks with gown during surgery.

All in the past five years. No bras of any kind were permitted. I was told that it was because they don't want constricting clothes on the patient or anything in the way of the monitors and they want the patient to have sterile clothes on.

So, just make the 'phone call and find out.

During the surgery you will be either in the gown or fully clothed. They will not let you just wear a sports bra. one of the reasons is that you might later puta a case of some sexual harrasment. It is better to avoid such awkward situations. Also I believe you wouldn't want to distract the doctors :)

It'll depend on hospital policy as to whether you'll be in your own clothes or one of their gowns. In any event, you'll not be allowed into surgery in just your own underwear. It's utterly inappropriate for you and completely unprofessional for them. I assume you'll have the surgery as an outpatient. A call to the center where the surgery is being done will get a definitive answer.

It's about your circulation you usually have to wear what they tell you so they have necessary access for any situation, usually they will put something on you to help keep clots from forming.

I've had 3 surgeries, and in all cases I was supposed to wear what they gave me, because there's no telling what will happen while your under, I mean you could lose control of your bladder or bowels, or, god forbid, they should need to do something in an emergency situation.

It's rare for anything bad to happen or for you to expel anything unexpected, but if it did happen you'd be better off with the gown.

Then again it depends on the doctor, the surgical center and the situation....mine was 2 shoulder surgeries and a wrist.

It depends. If it is an outpatient surgery in a doctor's office, and you are just having a "twilight" anesthesia, likely you will keep your clothes. If it is in a hospital, and you are having full or twilight anesthesia, inpatient or outpatient, goodbye all clothes, and hello gown. You see, if you would stop breathing, or your heart would stop, they need to have immediate access to your chest for CPR, and will not be wanting to stop to take your bra off.
This is very unlikely that it wiil happen, but hospitals are into safety.

You will be given a gown, disposable panties and possibly, a disposable hair cover. I've never heard of anyone being permitted to wear a bra to surgery...

Ok, they don't typically let you choose what to wear for surgery. You will be out and you won't know the difference anyways. I have had several surgeries and I work for 4 orthopods and more often than not you are naked except for the gown.

hospitals have certain procedures for patients that they have to follow, including personal clothing during procedures. you'll likely wear a gown and given the procedure you should be able to wear your panties. it doesn't matter what you look like in your bra at home....its not sexy time and the surgery isn't being done in your home.
