When mine were old enough to leave toys around I started having them help me pick them up. We made a game of it, and would sing while we tried to "beat the timer".

When they got a bit older, they balked, but with our "one mess at a time" rule, they knew picking up messes they made was the rule before they could play with something else. Also, I made a point to let them know when I put away something I'd left out, so they knew everyone has to do it.

I make it into a game - let's see how fast we can put away the toys. I get down and help too. I have twins, so it helps when one is working really hard, the other automatically wants to be as good as the other.
When the toys are all put away we have a big cheer and clap our hands. It's been working for us for months now (the girls are 20 months old).

Two ways: Work with the toddler and sing "Clean up Time" together. Make a game of it by setting an egg timer and see how much can be picked up before the "bell" rings.

We have bought a toy chest, which my son personally selected for his 4 years birthday. It took us almost a week to decide on design; one day he is a fireman, second day he is a pilot and the next day he is a safari explorer. The deal was: we are buying what he has chosen, but he keeps all his toys, games and other stuff inside this chest after he has finish to play. It works until now, after year and a half.
This site has so many designs for boys or girls you would sure find one you both like.

My son is six and I still need to work with him but instead of doing it for him which is 100 times faster. I point out each item and ask him where it goes. When he was little he didn't always know where his toys went so with that I would show him. He's getting much better but is still overwhelmed if the room is completely trashed...

this works with my child

i say jake pick up your green car and put it in the bin. it also teaches colors and shapes.

hes four now and its still a struggle, get the toys done before hes too tired, a tired child is harder to get to work
