i have purchased about a year ago an authentic, real xp home edition cd- its all shiny and hologram. Anyway i spent like $220 aus dollars on it and apparently i can install it on as many computers as i want all at once- as in they can all run and update at the same time. I heard this when i called up Microsoft today- but i just want to make sure. Can i install it on as many computers i want legally and have them update? (cuz the guy could barley speak english)

it is a retail version, not OEM. i just don't know whether to trust the MICROSOFT technician over the phone or not. I told him specifically if it was Ok to run xp on more than one comp at a once and if they will all be updatable at the same time and he said yes because it is retail. i just dont know ???

The answer is NO you can't.

no it's illegal. What you mean is you bought the retail version, yes you can install it on more than one computer, but only one computer at a time. there are 2 versions, retail, and OEM. OEM is the version that comes pre-installed in a new computer and cannot be transported to another machine. When that computer dies, so does the license. Retail version, which you have can be transported.
Having the retail version running on more than one machine is do-able. there is a trick to it. If you wait at least 6 months between installs, most of the time it will pass authentication. If it doesn't make the call to microsoft and they will ask you if you deleted it from the old computer before they give you a new key. say yes. I stumbled across this loophole after installing XP on a new computer while I was away from home when my old computer was at home stored in a closet. A few months later I dug the old one out of the closet and it still worked fine, ran windows update and checked in at microsoft as a legit copy. i did format it and put ubuntu on it soon after though, so I don't know if they will eventually catch on and shut them both down , my guess is no.

usually not. they don't license like that. read the EULA that comes with the software. Even if you have a corporate agreement with Microsoft (Select agreement), you still have to pay for each PC you install even though you only get one CD from Microsoft.

I am 100% positive if you install that on more than one PC or laptop you are violating the licensing agreement.

If you read the fine print, or the EULA, you will find that you may install it on ONE computer, and one computer only. Note that they give you one sticker. Microsoft has no "infinite use" license. I've argued with them before, it won't work.

That would hold true if it was the corporate edition whereas you could install it on all the computers in your office building.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.

ONE MS WINDOWS OPERATING SYSTEM FOR ONE COMPUTER, JUST ONE.

ANY ADDITIONAL COMPUTERS WILL NEED THERE OWN SEPARATE SYSTEMS.

YOU COULD LIKELY INSTALL IT ON OTHER COMPUTERS BUT YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO UPDATE BECAUSE THE KEY WILL ALREADY BE REGISTERED FOR THE FIRST COMPUTER.
