I am taking a university course this fall and today will be my first biology lab. There was a lot of work we were supposed to have done for today and I'm not confident I did it right. I guess what I'm worried about is that I'm not intelligent enough to do well and I'll look like a fool. I'm so tense and worried right now I keep wanting to just drop the course to avoid the situation, but I've already invested 100 dollars and I want to take the course because if I do I can hang out with my friend Troy 2-3 times a week which I never get to do. I just need help calming down right now.

Relax first. Stay clam, try to keep a cool mind first. Thats most important. In what ever situation dont panic. Chill, everything will fall into place if you let it. Control yourself and most importantly your mind. Nothing is impossible.

Relax and take it easy! First of all, you must clear your mind from whatever is bothering you at the moment. Let go of any negative thoughts and chill. Maybe put in your favorite CD and sing along with it or watch your favorite DVD. If you really suffer from a panic attack, try to focus your mind on one very special and positive thought/situation and try to breathe easy. Breathing into a paper bag also helps. Lay down and relax your muscles. You should certainly take the Course because it will surely help you later on finding a better job. And I am sure you would be disappointed at yourself even more if you drop the Course. That's life! It is not just about the easy and simple things, in life there are a lot of difficult tasks to fulfill and you have to do them just like anybody else. Hang in there, once you get the Course accomplished you will be very proud of yourself! Good luck!

By the way, sometimes, it helps to do some Yoga or other relaxing sports - anything that clears your mind is good for you. Take some time and you will see, that things work out much easier than you thought they would.

Most people have test anxiety especially when doing something like lab testing for the first time. Just relax and know that you are not alone in feeling that way, just take a deep cleansing breath before you start and clear your head of everything except your subject. If you happen to draw a blank try glancing up and to the right and it may help you to recall the information. Good Luck.

Well if you're only doing it to hang out with Troy, it probably wasn't a good idea.

On the other hand, you did the best you could, and provided you're teacher isn't a Nazi who exterminates people who gets things wrong, you'll be fine. The only person who will make you feel like a fool is yourself. Teachers are there to accept you did the best you could and to help you.

Thats if you did bad. I'm sure you didn't, but if you want advice, what always helps me is to think that

they're out there, and I'm in here behind my skull. I'm protected. Its just happening out there, not really to me.

I have read some litterature about panic attacks. But they allways seem to have a more scientific approach and that is nothing I need in my struggle to survive those horrible panic attacks. This is a "hand on" and very practical book. I felt it was written to me. I am sure that you are going to feel the same.

Joe Barry writes exactly how I think. The examples are perfectly described. And the method is genius. I recommend this book and thanks Joe Barry for writing it. It changes your life

I've been a college prof, and we all know that the class drop-out is much more likely to fail than the class make-up. Don't worry; ask what you can do for extra credit and have something good in mind to suggest.
