I have asked a few questions on here that I have had helpful answers too. So here is a big one. I live in Oakland County Michigan, the city of Pontaic. All my life I have wanted to reach out and help people and make a difference. I have done ton's of reasearch and have found that there aren't enough shelter's, orphanages, or hotlines that actually help people. At least not in my city or county. They all want payment and send the people they are "helping" to someone else. I believe that when someone comes to you for help, then you do whatever you can to help that person. I know people think that all homeless people are bad but I have found that not to be the case always. My question is .... I want to make an organization or a house for people that have been abused, raped, run away, homeless, sucidal, have a child they don't want, a place that parents who have had enough can bring their child and get help....ect. To really make a difference and help people. Non Profit

These 3 sites-1 from the IRS on filing, a booklet in ppdf form on being a 501(c)3 organization, called such because that is the IRS Code that governs the not-for-profit business you are exploring, and one from a tax consultant offered as a public service on filing for a 501(c)3 corporation (and it must be a corporation), should get you started at the very least, It is not cheap to get started, and if you have the funds, and the people to man the board of your corporation, it can be a very good idea....but you will need to be specific on the who's, what's when's where's why's and
how's of your incorporated organization.

Good luck

There are a number of ways you can help. (below are a few).

The more intensive of these is researching, applying for and implimenting grants. You need to be specific in your requests and where the money will be spent, but it's a way to get things moving. The problem is there are all types of hoops and hurdles you have to do in order to get this money, so some of these other suggestions might be more helpful.

You mentioned a hotline for help. Most hotlines are phone data bases where an operator takes information and forwards people to the proper help. This is something simple you coudl do, if you have the time. Post your cell number on flyers in areas where you can target your audience, but first you will need to do some door knocking. Establish a contact with a temporary employement service, an out-patient medical office, perhaps even a pro-bono laywer -- you will need these professionals so you can direct these people to who can help them most.

Another solution is simply bringing attention to the problem. (one example, some friends and I collected cigarette butts at an intersection for a month, made a pile from them and snaped some photos, the local paper picked it up and pointed out the problem - a week later, the local police watched the area and handed out a number of littering fines). --- but I digress, you can bring attention in a number of ways: Perhaps gathering your friends and their friends and organizing a homeless night, where you all live outdoors (without tents and phones, etc) in a park. Set up on a saturday when plenty of people will be going by. A large crowd always draws attention. Post signs so people can know what you are doing. Perhaps even for an entire weekend. You can set up donation points and donate those proceeds to one of the established shelters. If you have enough people, alert the local paper, they are always interested in protests.
- Another idea you can do on your own. I know people have gotten tired of the 'ribbon' campaigns, but you could pick a ribbon color, or use something different (a star, a peace sign, whatever). The local police department should be able to tell you how many domestic abuse, rape, sucides, etc. have occured in the last year, two years, whatever time frame you want. (you may have to pay a couple dollars to get the report); then post your markers in a high-traffic area (like median of a road coming into town, or in a park). Again people will see all the 'ribbons' and wonder what they are for. You make get the activist lable, but by gosh darn, that's what you are doing, trying to get action.
-- you'll be amazed at how quickly you get supporters and in turn get noticed. Once you get your message out there, you will be able to better network and find people that can help you with your goals.
-- I like this start simple approach, because it shows people you are willing to stand up for what you want to do. So many peope are out to run scams, if you show you're behind what you do, it helps ease those fears.

** On the bigger scale, you can go a step farther and partner with friends in another town and do the same project. Set up a MySpace page and get this thing rolling across the country.

Keep me posted, I'd be interested to know what you do.

Hi here in England we have an organisation called an Advosary group what this is are volunteers who are paired up with people in these type of circumstances who need someone to help them.

It will not help all the criterias you have mentioned but just to have someone to speak to or someone to help with any paperwork/forms etc would I am sure be a huge help. There may also be volunteers who may help give a parent a break for a weekend voluntarily.

I wish you all the luck and best wishes

Sounds like you have a good heart and great intentions. However, be expected to run into a lot of legalities and insurance issues in this project. I am sure there is government funding but the red tape will probably exhaust you.

Your ambitions are pretty widespread. Maybe start out ona smaller scale, pick one group to help and start there. Maybe babysit for people for free or help out at school with various programs. Schools always need volunteers. Or maybe offer yourself as a Big Sister kind of thing in your community.

Good luck with your venture.

You may want to contact one of the proactive churches in your town as well as the local mental health center and see if they would be in terested in helping, eg. grant writing, sponsorship, etc.
