Since messing about with msconfig and inadvertantly deleting things, I have now lost cd/dvd drive, I have looked in device manager there shows an exclamation mark next to drive, however righ clicking and updating drivers does not work I get the message computer has most up to date driver, I have tried putting driver details and cd/dvd manufacturer on the net, but to no avail, I have tried restoring my computer to earlier dates but have all failed to solve the problem, Help!
Thanks in advance for any advice. Mike.

Please try the following steps and be happy.. nothing is lost:

Steps to configure Windows to use a Normal startup state

1. Click Start, click Run, type msconfig, and then click OK.

The System Configuration Utility dialog box appears.
2. Click the General tab, click Normal Startup - load all device drivers and services, and then click OK.
3. When you are prompted, click Restart to restart the computer

I had this same fault a short while ago, and went and bought a new dvd writer. Installed it and continued to go about my downloading of music etc.. Then the same thing happened to that one and the only thing I could think of was that I had downloaded some kind of virus. I tried the system restore to no avail and finally restored the PC from the very beginning wiping out everything on the disc. This was the cure and taught me not to download from these so called safe sites.

Sorry yet Vista is so new and has many compatablity matters. no longer many experts available to help.. My in basic terms theory is: Did your force incorporate an installation CD? are you able to do away with the relationship from the force to the pc and attempt reinstalling? Or is your pc a preinstalled equipment with restoration disks? in case you have the money, circulate out and get a sparkling one.

I also lost my DVD burner for a week, but then found it down the back of the fridge.

I check behind it on a regular basis now and have since recovered two belts for a Dyson vacuum cleaner, 76 US cents, a shirt button, a cat and the entire crew of a Norwegian whaling ship previously thought to be 'lost' in the Bermuda Triangle.

Honey's method should work.
Note to Jenny O, always save (NEVER run) any downloaded programs and scan them before installing. Also, get some sort of 'site adviser' (there are loads available for free if you Google them) to check the safety of any sites before you go there. That'll save you any problems in the future. :)

Have you gone inside the box and messed with the cabling? If so, you may have left a cable loose. If not, delete the device altogether and reboot, Windows may pick it back up.
