What's worked best for me, is to take out the core and outer leaves, wrap totally in paper towel - like three continuous sheets, then put in a plastic grocery bag in a crisper. Will stay more than a week this way, doesn't get soggy, and you can just cut off the rusty bits. Works for iceburg, romaine, green leaf lettuces. I had bought a lettuce keeper from Tupperware, but it just doesn't get the job done.

Take it out of it's plastic bag. Don't cut it with anything metal as this send it brown. Keep it in the refridgerator but if it goes limp plunge it into very cold, (icy) water for a few minutes as this revives it and turns it crispy again.

Don't wash it until you are ready to use,put it in an air tight bag or container with a paper towel and store in the crisper drawer..
If you find that you are using it daily or more, seperate it(by hand) into a few baggies so you are only opening one at a time.

This used to happen to me although i find the best thing to do is to wash it as soon as i buy it, then leave on kitchen bench until completly dry, wrap in a dry tea towel (dont use a moist one because it is the moisture that makes it go bad). Then put in the fridge without container.

I tend to do like wizard. I works well, they need water to stay "Fresh". It works well with parsley and herbs too. Put them in a bag and roll their bottoms with wet paper towels.

wash thoroughly and allow to drain in collander in sink. Shake off excess water and place inside damp not wet papertowel. Then, place in plastic bag or covered bowl and place in "crisper" drawer in your fridge.
Do not cut lettuce. Cutting process bruises it and it will "rust" or turn brown quickly. When you are ready to serve it. Wash it again, let drain in collander in sink and gently tear leaves into bite sized pieces.

i keep mine in a zip lock bag for up til about a week or so and i never cut it i always pull apart

Main thing is do not cut it - rip it if you can. cutting destroys the cells you gut through, and leads to quicker decomposition.
Ripping does less damage.
