Check out the martial Art Aikido....
It is, pretty much, a defence only system but is VERY effective in the 'REAL' world... I have had to rely on it on occasion...

It sounds like you saw a video or read some or the posts on here or other forums about how mma or krav maga are the only ways to be "effective on the street". Good job, way to believe things without investigating them for yourself.
The only thing that's really changed over the thousands of years for combat is the introduction of guns and, realistically, guns aren't even that new. Even if they were...no hand to hand technique will help you against an assailant that's 30 feet away with a firearm. Knives have been around for thousands of years...so, since we have them in our modern society does that make them more dangerous now than before? No.
Use some logic. There's a reason why the styles that exist today still exist -- because the practicioners of those styles were able to fight and live long enough to pass on their knowledge.
Also, you can't learn how to defend yourself from a website, video, or a book. If you disagree there as well, good luck. I just hope that you never have a need to truly defend yourself.
I'd highly suggest you check into your local schools and see what's available and what suits you. Train under a teacher. You'll be infinitely better off for it.
And yes, Krav Maga and those other styles are good...but nothing is absolute. Everything has a pro and a con to it. What you need to do is educate yourself in what's the most effective for you and study that. Just don't fall into the trap that kung fu is useless or that karate is outdated or even that bjj is the only way to go because none of those things are true.
Do some leg work and find a studio to train in.

If you want to learn you self defence you need to go to a class. If you have never done MA before you will have no idea if you are doing the moves described on a website correctly.
It is also very important that you get to practise them on someone. If you don't, you won't know how it feels when you do the move on someone.
And as for Karate and Kung Fu not being practicle or usable, you don't know what you are talking about. I would be very suprised if anyone could stand up to a well aimed gyakizuki to the solar plexus or yokogeri to the head. A mawashigeri to the thigh would also be a good way to disable an apponent.
And if you want to know what those funny sounding words mean and how to perform them, go and join a karate class.
PS: Where exactly do you think the moves you will be learning in self defence classes came from?

I recommend Tekken 3. If you learn martial arts in cyber space you will only learn how to fight cyber opponents. The problem with this type of question is that everyone is looking for the quick answer that does not involve getting off their behind. There is no martial art that can be mastered in a few weeks or months. All of them require years of dedication before you can claim to have mastered any serious techniques. I f you are such an expert on what is useable in modern society then you would know that you can't learn how to fight from the web.

My friend if you truly believe that Martial Arts (ie Kung Fu, Karate ect) are not "useable or practicle" then you are a lost cause...
Explain to me what is "useable?"
If by "useable" you mean something that teaches you to block / evade attacks and to throw your own attacks then you will learn this by taking any martial art. If you think that some system like Krav Maga is more "useable" because it is more modern then you are a nob, Krav Maga and the like are great systems but they are just another way of doing the same thing.
At the end of the day we have two arms and two legs so pretty much anything that can be done in a fight has already been explored through most traditional martial arts, in fact martial arts are born of a time when people needed this stuff to save their lives and their honour, not like todays puncey society where people hide behind lawyers.
Anyway, end of the day you picked a strange thread to ask this stupid question.
If you're too stupid or lazy to learn how to fight properly, then buy a gun, but I warn you if you are as dumb as you seem you will most likely shoot yourself with it by accident.

How do you know Karate and Kung Fu are not "use able" have you ever trained in these arts for a long time and use them for real modern street fighting combat? Obviously not!
You can't learn any martial arts technique properly on the net. Find a school and a legit instructor. That's the only way you'll ever be efficient in martial arts.

find a good Sifu Sensei in either Kungfu or Okinawan Karate. these are practical systems on the street ,you obviously are a novice who hasn,t any experience of real fighting arts . ignorence is bliss . you cannot learn anything effective off the net or d.v.d,s. find a good teacher and work hard for 5 years and by then you should be mature enough and skillfull enough to evaluate again.good luck,

This is a great example of the Bruce Lee mentality.
If you think that Karate is not practical for the street, watch this...
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=3265122767232885469&q=taika+oyata&total=14&start=0&num=10&so=0&type=search&plindex=1
and this:

This master of TRUTH is using the techniques of his kata. You know, those useless things that Bruce Lee always talked about! YES, his KATA!!!
They were useless to Bruce because he did not know anything about them. And no one would teach him.
These are just two video. If you want, go see him in person and he'll be happy to introduce you to his non-street practical art.
