Plasma to me is the same idea as blood transfusions, and should make no difference to the JW. It's a workaround for them. But a decision to save a life, especially with a family member, is where I draw the line with any religion that would prevent me from doing so. I guess I wouldn't make a good Jehovah's Witness. Or a relative of one.

as an ex Jehovahs Witness I can tell you that most of them would rather bleed to death because they believe that they will be resurrected on the earth after Armageddon. If they accept the transfusion and are still alive when Armageddon comes they will be destroyed, so they would rather die now and be resurrected than face (in their eyes) certain destruction. However, the societies teachings on accepting blood transfusions is hypocritical. JW's are not allowed to accept whole blood but are allowed to accept certain blood components such as haemoblobin and immunoglobulins, both I might add, collected from human blood.

A real JW would not accept blood, even it it meant they might die as a result. Crazy, but that is their right.
It all came about from a misinterpretation of the text "abstain from blood". The passage was relating to non-kosher foods in Jewish times, ie animal sacrifices etc etc. nothing to do with life saving blood transfusions that had not been invented! They thought they had to moral high ground when people became infected with HIV through transfusions, but nowadays all donated blood is carefully screening. I have given blood, I feel it is my public duty to do so. My dad is very ill in hospital and receives regular transfusions. Without them he would die. Thank god he is not a JW or else he wouldnt be with us!

Yes, it is legal, at least in the US. People retain the right to refuse or insist on alternative medical care. People are even allowed to keep "do not resuscitate" forms on file that are binding on medical professionals. (This doesn't constitute legal advice though . . . if you're really that concerned contact a lawyer ask them the same question.)

In the case of JWs, they will accept alternative treatments that don't involve blood transfusions, but do the same job.

Nope I wouldn't. Even beyond my scriptural beliefs, I don't trust BTs. Interestingly, one thing that drew my Grandmother to being a Witness, was the blood issue. She had always been against BTs for the medical reasons.

The situation of the automobile accident and bleeding to death does not exist.

What is needed at this time is blood expanders, Salt water works better than blood or plasma.

The blood you put into your body today, if it's not rejected by your body, takes 3 days to start working like 'your' blood.

In the three days it takes the blood to work, your body is capable of producing more 'safer' blood of your own.

If a person has lost that much blood, then a blood transfusion won't save them either.

More people have died from the blood transfusion, than those who have died because they didn't receive a transfusion.

Jesus said those who save their souls will lose it, and those who lose their souls will save it.

I'll put my faith in Jesus over any doctor you want to name.

Would this person not be unconscious if this were happening? The medical team would most likely just do it automatically for there would be no time for decision making.
