Because he can honey. He's worked out that if he wakes up and is bored he can cry and you will come running. Once you sort this bit out in about 6 months time he will do it again. How you deal with it is up to you. Personally I favoured controlled crying. Worked like a dream, nightmare whilst you are doing it but they soon get the message then when my son has a 'blip' it only takes a night to sort it out. First time is horrid though. Read up on it and stick to it rigidly. If you give in and dont do it properly it does not work (hence all the messages you see on here from people who say the tried it and it didnt work) It can take up to a week but most people I know have it cracked by the 2nd or 3rd night. Good luck. I am amazed that people are telling you to go to the doctors about a toddler that wakes up in the night! Its very normal.

He may be having nightmares/terrors which often occur around age 2. There is often no reason for them apart from a maturing brain but some causes could be stress has he started a nursery group or has a sibling appeared?
They may well stop as quickly as they started, but if he is getting tired during the day because of his fear of going back to sleep at night don't deprive him, he'll just end up becoming ill because his body is not getting enough sleep.
You could try a calming bedtime routine to help him relax and maybe a night light in his room, in case of any monsters under the bed!

21 months? Among other things it could be he's wet, he's scared, he's hungry, he's alone, he needs reassurance that all if well in his young life, he's had a nightmare, his teeth are bothering him, he misses his mommy, he heard a dog bark outside, his tummy is bothering him, he knocked a toe hard against the side of his crib, he is a baby and babies have been known to cry for no reason. Ask his doctor, by all means ask his doctor. (I'm the father of three, each one "different" from the others).

Are you letting him go to sleep in the lounge then carrying him off to bed?
Did this with my daughter and she would wake up in the middle of the night screaming. Once we started getting her to sleep in bed then she was fine (I think it was waking up in a different place to where she fell asleep)

get the GP to check him out to make sure he is healthy. If he is the next time he crys in the night leave him. its up to you if the child is healthy, just leave him to cry himself to sleep. in less than a week he will be sleeping through again.

Sounds like the back teeth are coming through. Take him to your doctor or health visitor to get him checked over just in case. Hope everything is well :)
