Residency is a stage of postgraduate medical training certification by a resident physician who has received a medical degree (M.D. or D.O.). The place of training is usually primary care or referral specialty setting caring for hospitalized or clinic patients, mostly with direct supervision by more senior physicians. The training covers all the areas of medicine.

Whereas for the Specialization (called fellowship) is the stage following residency where a physician may choose to be trained in any sub-specialty.
