I don't particularly like it. In fact I would rather avoid it. Every so often there is someone interesting, but trying to have a conversation with someone who is opinionated or a bore or cant keep a flow simply makes the trip seem longer. I'd rather watch the movie, eat my meal and read.

No I don't talk to my neighbor on the plane, train or bus. I find it unnecessary and in the country that I live in it is not ethically expected to exchange a word or two, as a matter of fact it would be a little unusual to do that.

I don't like talking to people on planes. If they start the conversation, I'll smile and respond, but I'll usually try to back my way out of the situation. I usually take my seat and put my iPod on immediately so I don't have to deal with the situation--even if I'm not listening to music, I keep the earbuds in my ears so my neighbor doesn't chat with me.

If I travel alone I will talk with my neighbor. But most of the time I travel with someone.

Depends on my mood and the person sitting next to me. Usually, I would try to smile to my neighbor but if he/she chose to ignore me or just don't want to be friendly, then I'll let it be. I'll won't bother and just keep to myself throughout the flight. Have come across some very friendly ones who chatted all the way to our destination. Makes the flight more bearable especially long haul journey.

I do. I suppose I drive some people nuts, but I think it's interesting to get to now the people around you, especially on really long flights. If somebody is obviously trying to sleep or read, I leave them alone though.
Edit: I should add that I cannot sleep on planes at all.

The following items are in my carry-on luggage:
Breath mints (in case I want to talk to my neighbor-- the quarters are so close)
A book (in case I really don't want to talk to my neighbor--they'll leave you alone if you seem engrossed in a book)
A dvd player a couple of movies and two sets of headphones
(in case I want to share my movie--and my breathmints-- with my neighbor)

It depends. Yes you should at least say hello. If you feel like having a conversation make it a short one or none at all it is up to you.

A little bit of small talk is ok, but I like to read. It helps me relax.
