mankind has gained intelligence over the past 5000 years, more so in the last 50 than at any other time, probably due to nutrition. The mean IQ of ancients was probably about 90-95, the man today is about 100. So, not alot has changed in the mean, but the extremes seem to be far more (or less) than those found many, many years ago. It would seem that wisdom is another thing entirely. The bible contains much wisdom, but much foolishness at the same time. The trick here is to sort out the good from the bad. AND, you must be very careful as to what you read into the bible, for it is not a literal piece of work. Add to this that translation after translation has been made, each with an agenda of some church, some person, etc. Much of the scrolls from which the translations were made have large missing parts...so the "fill in is done with agenda going on. If I had to read a bible, I would insist that the scrolls be translated by a ancient language scholer, preferably one who had NO religious agenda what so ever (agnostic? Atheist? ) for a true rendition of what he scrolls have written. ANY time we are presented with a translation that is controlled by any church, we have an agenda at work, and often that agenda can be traced back to money. Never for a second think that money is not at the root of all things, for it is. Unfortunatley. Money and power...a pair that seem to go hand in hand.

No they couldn't have been. The main reason: The microscope. From the beginning of the human race up until the 1700's and even later mankind's knowledge of how sickness and disease started and spread remained an unseen mystery. Observation taught us very little on how to treat and stop infections from spreading through the air and through contaminated surface contacts, especially in the Bible days. In fact we today wouldn't be much farther advanced then they were if the microscope still wasn't invented, example, the black plague epidemic in 1347. If it weren't for the ever increasing advancements of the power of the microscope our scientists would still be in the spontaneous generation theory today. That is why I am now debating the world on how could any human on Earth at the time of Moses,(1350 b.c.) have the knowledge only gained through the microscope,(microbiology) to be able to write a highly advanced disease prevention plan for the human race which is written at the beginning of The Laws of Moses in Exodus thru Deuteronomy. These instructions and warnings could only come from someone with a working knowledge of the germ theory.Which didn't evolve in mainstream science until the late 1800's. Wouldn't this fact of science prove that an advanced scientific mind belonging to a scientist had to have wrote this in 1350 b.c. If no human on Earth could have had that knowledge then and even up to today, then who did? The Bible quotes and names the scientist who is speaking directly to, writing it down and teaching it to for forty days and nights to Moses as "The Lord", your God, your Creater. The pages and pages of these advanced scientific writings could not come from any Jewish or Egyptian scientist or even Moses himself at that time. Nor is it creative writing by any ancient Jewish scribes. It is the actual words and scientific knowledge of the God Yahweh, what ever or whoever God is.

Joseph was supposedly really good at math...

Moses was prolly educated in Egyptian science and mathamatics as well

Luke was a physician

We all know how smart Soloman was

Daniel was fairly sharp and at least thought for himself.

Saul, Sampson, Lot and many other "men" were not terribly notorious for smarts.

Jesus, of course, was the sharpest mind of them all...

None were noted for their intelligence though explicitly...though it is strange that certain men of the Bible seemed to know the way of things biological, astronomical, geophysical and etc...or not so strange being as they were inspired by a Creator who could add to thier understanding as He saw fit. Love in Christ, ~J~

Depends which men nowadays you are comparing them with, but in general, no they were not smarter. The vast majority could not read or write. They had no knowledge of many basic scientific principles, and very little in the way of mathematics.

the adult males who wrote it have been believers and the Bible became into written interior the impression of the Holy Spirit i.e. it guided them properly and precisely. consequently there is not any question relating to the Bible being untrue or approximation of information

Smarter than what? They were goat breeders, camel traders, basket weavers, spice sellers, rug makers..... nothing requiring a Masters degree. Of course they weren't smarter!

Actually they were not, and that was how God wanted them. He did not look for the wise or the scholars, just people He had a personal relationship with.

maybe not smarter, but definitely wiser. there's a bit of a difference. men (and women) were wiser fifty or sixty years ago than we are now, but i guess that wasn't the question...
