stupid little girls that live down the street and possibly other strangers (the little girls i have seen open the gate and run off) and they keep passing buy and teasing my dogs (1 a rotty the other a lab) and opening the gate so as to get my dogs to run after them (?).i am not sure of the real depth of stupidity of these girls but i need to do something to protect myself incase. i live in a place where i need these animal to ward off thieves and other troubles and i let them run around my yard as they wouldnt really ward off trouble if they were tied up....its kinda like if you had a gun guard in a safe and all of a sudden you need the gun and well there you are tryin to get the gun out and then take the guard off...really makes no sence imo. WHAT should I do???

Get your self an auto alarm, they sell the door switches cheap, and an oooga horn from JC Whitney and hook it up to the gate with an inverter plugged into the house. As the little shavers crack open the gate, they get an OOOGA horn blast alarm. EVERYBODY and I mean EVERYBODY spins head for an OOOGA horn.

The next time you see the girls come near your house, go outside and tell them the police are on the way (scare tactic). If you know where they live, I would go talk to the parents. I would also let the parent know if they choose not to do anything and this continues, you will call the police and file a report. This is your private property and no matter how old the child, they are trespassing. The parents would be banging down your door when your dogs attack the child, because of what the child was doing (opening your gate). Even though you said a lock is out of the question, you might want to rethink that, even if you just put a combination lock on the gate.

since you cant lock the gate... um... add an additional inner fencing at the gate so that they cant go out the gate. Like a mesh wall. almost like a child gate... but something that cant be removed by someone with out tools. Perhaps chicken wire... in the opening of the gate.

or some other type of mesh type steel wire. it might work for a lil while... tell they learn that the dogs cant get out. Either that... or tie them out with enough cable that they can have full run of the yard. I hope there is not trees and shrubs through out... cause it would be a mess to go untangle them all the time.!

Get in touch with the town you live in for the laws so you know what you can do to fix it. If you can, put a "hot wire" around it so they wont keep opening it. If that isn't an option set up a camera & get it on tape or film so you can take it to the parents of these kids or the police so you aren't held liable if something happens to them because of their stupidity.

Go down and grab the parents my the neck and slap them senseless

Now back to reality, Increase the height of the gate with a catch that can be opened from inside but only by an adult/taller person from outside

If this wont work, try option 1

why is a lock not an option? maybe u could use a combination lock, they only take a few seconds to open and u dont need a key, if time/carrying a key is your problem.

maybe u can get a childproof hinge on the gate (like they have around swimming pools), depending how old the children are.

i would also get the police/council involved as you could get into lots of trouble and problems if your dogs get out, its not worth it!

It is a shame these kids are doing this-perhaps you could remove the gate, just put up fence? Just plain weird these kids, do the parents know about this? I would want to know if it were my kid for sure. Maybe you could befriend the kids? Or are they trouble all the way around? I wish you luck and your doggies too.

My first choice would be to put a lock on the gate but since that isn't an option put an electric wire up around inside or outside your choice either way dogs won't cross it to get out and if it pops the kids mabe they won't come back. Be sure you get one that pulsates not one that has a steady stream of electricity.

i can't understand why you can't have pad lock on the gate if you dont' you will be in some deep kimshee soon. i know they must not realize how they can do things if provoked. its very sad when kids do things like this. i guess try and catch them take picture and take to their parents and tell them warn then and maybe make police report on.

put a lock on the gate and call the police and get them to go have a chat with their family.you have every right to be careful as the law wont be so kind to you if your dogs get out+do something out of character(biting someone, involved in a car accident property damage etc)you need to feel secure and you do have rights.just a friendly chat may be enuf to scare off from doing again.goodluck.i have 4 dogs and i had to put up an extra gate to stop the neighbours kids from knocking at my door, and i put a chain on it.they gave up as i caught them out,as it took longer to try open.they dont bother anymore..hope things workout for you.
