A _short_ answer would point out that we are limited to the surviving archaeological record. So ephemeral carvings like from wood are less likely to survive the passage of time.
BUT it certainly seems that Paleolithic Man recognised that human life came from women and believed that everything came from a/the/whatever Goddess.
There have been male-like figurines uncovered but they do not have the same popularity as the Goddess figurines.

The oldest religious artifacts were small carvings of pregnant woman. It is likely that those early rituals revolved around sex and conception. They have also found carvings of males with exagerated genatials, but what would most guys rather carve?
If the woman were the ones creating these idols (they did the manual tasks while the men were hunting) then it makes sense that they would make female "goddesses" to ask for help.

Earth was always believed to be female as she "gives birth" to trees, fruit, crops and seasons. From there, many goddesses came about and some gods were created as a communal masculine identity was developed. I'm just theorizing because I wasn't there. I was busy that day. LOL

I heard about that, I suppose women were valued because they were the "creators of life" so therefore women created the world but then as patriarchy influenced peoples thoughts a woman was too insignificant and weak to be able to create something like this.

yes this is true. early religions worshiped women godesses as birthgivers to the world.
the shift of religions to male deities coincides with the invention of the plow. with males' and their upper body strength becoming more important.

I don't think it really matters. Mankind will always see a need to personalize god be it in a male or female form. In a true essence i believe that while our energy can impact how we experince god that god is neither masculine or femminme.

makes more sense.
female = birth = life
early humans could easily see that new life came from the female, whereas they didn't understand much about sperm and fertilization...
so the obvious connection is between femininity and creation, lending credence to the goddess theory
