You could take the train to Shenzhen and get to Hong Kong that way.

1) fly to guangzhou and take a bus ride or train ride HK.
2) fly to shenzhen and take bus / train or ferry to HK.

3 things to take note -
1) your onward ticket is departure from hong kong or city in china.

2) if your onward ticket is departure from china city, check your visa and make sure that you have at least a double entry visa to China

3) you did not state your nationality, so must check if you required a visa to enter hong kong.
China visa nd hong kong visa are different.

flying from beijing to shenzen does not really save you enough money to justify the hassle of having to find your way to the train station and passing through customs at the shenzen border which is very busy.

Take the flight, it is more convenient and you will be able to relax.

from beijing.......cheapest is bus - brutal!!!...next is train - 24 hrs - brutal!!!...find a deal on a flight - 3hrs - comfy!!!....flying to a neighbouring city on the mainland is cheaper ( i've done it ) but not worth the hassle
