I work at a shooting range and I can tell you that we have had problems with all of the firearms you mentioned. We have also had problems with H&Ks. The only handguns we have not had problems with are Glocks and Sigs. We had a Glock 17 at the range that had 750, 000 rounds through it (est) that never went down once. We have also had a Sig P226 9mm and 2 Sig P229 .40 S&Ws that have only been down because the recoil springs were not replaced on time. Those would be my recommendations if you are serious about buying something that will last. However these are rangeguns that I am speaking of so if you are planning on just shooting a few times a month then buy what is most comfortable for you and what you shoot the best.

I shoot in a local tactical shoot every Friday night. The gun that always jams seems to be the XD. I prefer the Beretta's Px4 myself. With 147gr bullets there is as much recoil as a 22lr. The ergonomics of the gun make it a gun that is comfortable to shoot 200 rounds at a time with no discomfort. The rotating barrel makes recoil feel better than both M&P and the XD. As far as reliability, the XD is known for extractor problems and poorly designed mags. The M&P is now showing the same extraction problems now that it has more time in the hands of shooters. Accuracy depends on you my friend. I am a person who shoots at least 250 rounds a week. Along with that 250 is another 250 with my shooting partner that doesn't have their own gun. I have had my Px4 9mm for a year and a half. I have had only one problem with it; getting others to leave it alone. The fact that the Px4 is a Single action/ Double action also gives many advantages. You can leave it loaded without cocking the hammer for saftey. Or you can cock the hammer back and have an lighter first pull on the trigger. The gun is also the easiest to break-down and clean. If done right you can "combat load" durring reloads too. If you don't know what that is it is when you slam the mag into the gun when the slide is locked back and it sends the slide forward automaticly. It saves time on relaoding and it looks cool as hell. XD doesn't do it, not sure about the M&P. Join the fourms for each of these guns and see who is complaining. The beretta is the way to go! If you want a carbine to go along with it you can get the CX4 as well. They actually share the same mags (up to 20 rounds). Their Sub-Compact is soon to follow and that to uses the same mags too. Get the Px4 to be different and you will be greatfull.

My first choice would be the Springfield, in fact, I just bought my second one, a new compact model. It's reliable, accurate and fits my hand very well. Second choice would be the S&W for the same reasons. I only place it second to the Springfield because of some policies S&W decided to use a few years ago, and it's just my personal reaction to their bad choices. The Beretta would be my last choice. I have owned several beretta's and found the accuracy to be lacking and inconsistant from pistol to pistol. Also, reliability is chancey. If kept absolutely clean, it is fairly reliable, but if any dust etc get into the pistol, it can act up very badly. In Iraq, my brother, a medic, carried the M9 beretta. He came face to face with an armed insurgent at close range, drawing his beretta he attempted to chamber a round as he hit the ground, the beretta misfed and jammed. He was lucky in that his squad opened up on the guy, saving my brothers life. This was with a pistol that was clean and had been checked within the last hour. I carried a beretta 92fs ( the 92f model was the one that had catastrophic slide failure for the military and injured soldiers in the face) the FS model was issued to cure this problem, anyway, I found the best group I could get at 50 feet, was the size of a basketball. I returned the firearm to beretta. They sent it back to me and said it was "within specs" and there was nothing that they could do. I sold it and bought another 92fs. It was very accurate, but failed to feed regularly and I could not rely on it.
Hope this helps

The XD and Storm are very reliable. I have not had one hiccup with either of them. I have shot at least 5,000 rounds through my Beretta and 2k for the XD. I owned a S&W Sigma in .40 and it jammed every 3rd round. I have not had any experience with the M&P. The XD has less recoil than the Storm, better sights and grip. It fits my hand better. The trigger is much smoother as well. The beretta has an awesome SA trigger pull and well its a beretta.
WIth every thing bad I have heard about S&W not feeding and with my issue with mine I will not go with a Auto from them. Great Revolvers though.
XD and Storm very reliable, accurate (as accurate as shoot is)LOL, easy to take down and clean, looks good. Better safeties over the Smith

Go to a range and try them all. I specifically like the M&P. I have an XD and I have no complains. I've never shot a PX4 but I've heard good things about them. If you want an inexpensive good quality 1911, check out the STI Spartan. If you're really on a budget, try looking at the Beretta or Taurus 92.

In terms of accuracy and reliability I think the guns are pretty much neck and neck. That said, I lean towards the M&P simply because it is cost effective; that means it's less expensive. Besides, if you buy the M&P pistol, you will have a good reason to buy the M&P rifle. Gotta have a set, ya know.

Go with the XD. I own one (XD 45) and don't regret my purchase at all. Reliable, accurate, and easy to maintain. But I'll be honest, I'm biased, I don't care for Smith and Wessons or Berettas.

you should also consider a glock.
glocks are known to have probably the best reliability hands down. you here of glocks running for 100,000 plus rounds with no problems. nothing against the models that you listed, but they are still kinda of new to the market. glocks have been around since the 80's.

I own both the XD and M&P, both in .40 S&W. I love them both, but as surprised as I was (because I absolutely love the XDs) I think I actually like my M&P just a bit more.
