I'm shopping for a gift for my friend's son's babtism, but all the gifts I"m looking at say first communion. Isn't this something different, or can the gift go either way?

No these are not the same, and a First Communion gift would be inappropriate to mark a baby's baptism.

They are quite different. The first communion takes place around 4th grade, while (if Catholic), the Baptism takes place much earlier.

A suitable gift for a Baptism can be found at a Catholic gift shop; ask the person working at the store what they have that might be appropriate.

Look for something that refers to Christening, as this is the term most often used for infant baptism. First communion is very different and refers to the first time someone participates in the Holy Communion - eating the bread and wine.

A baby will not have their first communion til they are about 7 or 8 and have been confirmed in the church(accepting Christ)The baptism washes away the stain of original sin and that is all

This depends on the type of religion. In the original Christian Church you were given your first communion at you baptism. I know the Orthodox Christians still practice this...as for Roman Catholic, Catholic and Prot I do not know.
