Your best bet to get the widest range of information is to go to the major jobsearch websites like hotjobs or monster, and search keywords "event planner" - this will show you how many positions are open, who is hiring, and what the job entails.

Another very helpful resource is the U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook. According to the section on meeting and convention planners http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos298.htm

Median annual earnings of meeting and convention planners in May 2004 were $39,620. The middle 50 percent earned between $31,180 and $50,790. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $24,660, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $65,060

I highly recommend you read the entire section for detailed information about the scope and nature of the work involved.

Q: What does an event planner do?
A: An event planner does a multitude of things. Summing the vast area I'd suggest three areas:
- planning (event design, concept generation)
- execution (operations and logistics)
- evaluation (feedback collection, report to clients)

If you think about it here are several activities related to each phase. Should you focus in planning you'll have to rely on your creative side, while operations appeal more to the pragmatic individual. Evaluating an event correctly means correctly identify objectives and working side by side with the client.

Q: What's the scope of their work?
A: Make everyone who has stakes in the event happy. That could be a bunch of people ranging from e.g. the community hosting the event, to attendees to clients to sponsors. That is not very easy but highly rewarding in monetary and non-monetary terms.

Q: How much can an event planner with a degree expect to earn?
A: As you might be aware events come in different forms and require different efforts. On the same tone, the industry might be very diverse in terms of retribution from country to country. Your experience and knowledge are a good starting point. Just look out on the net for job listings and assess your skills accordingly.

Q: Where do they usually find employment (excluding the option of being self-employed)?
A: One good thing of events is that it is quite easy to get involved in the industry. There is a constant need of casual staff. On the other hand if you want to work as an event coordinator your resume will work for you. If you have a weak resume work hard to make it better.

Q:Are they in demand?
A: I have experience in Uk, Australia and Italy. Yes, they are in demand but you'll need good resume and good networking skills

This information is not comprehensive. For more details I strongly suggest the source below.

Hope this helps.
