extremism is a prequalification for atheist. A person can't be atheist without extremist.

I have given this much thought, since Atheist do not believe in an after life like Christians or Muslims do, they value life and see it is the most precious thing there is.
So I do not see that they would kill anyone in the name of non-belief for the simple reason that they believe death is forever once you are gone you are gone, that is a huge responsibility to feel!
They might try to convert others and wake them up to how precious life is, it is not to be wasted in anyway. Interesting once you believe in an after life or another life this life loses it's value, I can wast it away I can take another's life because this is not all there is. But if this is all there is it becomes something so valuable you don't want to wast a second of your life, you want to truly live life and totally feel alive every moment to be enjoyed and you could never take another's life because you know that in doing so you blotted him or her out of existence forever.

An athiest extremist would look very similar to a muslim or Christian extremist. Just without the associated clothing and other superficial accesories.

Often it's not about religion but culture and politics. Jordan is a moderate Muslim country. It isn't ruled by fanatics. However, remember some of the problems in the seventies introduced by the P.L.O., before the modern era of 'renouncing violence'. This is a matter of politics. It involves national security. Sometimes, wars are about many things: greed, ethnocentrism, colonialism, militarism, excessive nationalism, etc.

I don't believe that what you see in Israel is really about religion. It involves matters of faith but the government doesn't form its military policy based on religion. As for the role of Islam in the Middle East, certainly it is a contentious issue, one to be debated, but I think at the heart of it there is a conflict that is political in nature.

An extremist Buddhist would be an atheist extremist. Most likely, they would look like the ACLU though, because atheists wouldn't have a mandate from God to kill all the unbelievers.

Well someone will automatically pull out Stalin or Pol Pot as an example. However, rabid belief in a political philosophy is about the same as a religion.

You can't have an extremist based on lack of belief. However you can have a hatred of a certain religion, resulting in hate crimes against, christians, muslims, jews, etc.

I'm seen some militant atheists write some pretty strong op ed pieces. I think that is about as far on-the-attack as most athiests would go. Quite a civilized bunch really. When you know there are no virgins in heaven, its hard to be enthusiastic about being a martyr.

Like any extremist would. Stupid, murderous, arrogant and loud. They come here a lot. Maybe you can see some who are here now. They are the one's claiming that they made their choice to be Atheist because of science!

Granted my sample size is pretty small, but I've found Atheists not to be Extremist personalities. They are logical, but not necessarily uncompassionate. They just don't feel Divinity the way that religious folks do.
