Is the main issue with carrying a self defense item, except a gun, one of it being concealed verses being a hidden weapon?

WTH is wrong with the posters above?

IF YOU DO NOT KNOW THE TRUE ANSWER, SHUT THE HELL UP! They did not ask for opinion.

If you're not on parole or probation or some other legal restriction, YOU MAY have a knife or ice pick on your dashboard.

Do not conceal it on your person though.

On a side note, if your folding knife can be snapped open with the flick of the wrist, it is illegal. See 653K of the CA PC.

Send me a message if you have any more CA criminal law questions. Forget these dolts.

Ice Pick Weapon

Given the number of wrong answers, I thought I would weigh in. A fixed-blade knife or ice pick possessed for the pupose of self-defense would be a dirk or dagger under California law. It is NOT illegal to possess a dirk or dagger in a vehicle (or anywhere else) UNLESS it is concealed. (Penal Code section 12020.) A switch blade knife with a blade of over 2 inches is, however, illegal to possess in public.

No that's not legal, it would be considered being armed and dangerous. A person can carry mace, even conceal that and it would be ok. I don't think the main issue with carrying a self defense item has to do with being concealed and a hidden weapon, I think what makes it ill-legal or not is the TYPE of self defense item.

No, no, no. I read a book about a girl who got murdered by her boyfriend with an ice pick--the book was non-fiction. :( Ever since then, whenever I think about an ice pick, I remember the story. My preferred weapon of choice is mace, though. The spray, not the spiked club.

No, it is not legal to have anything that could be construed as a weapon in your car, and you would have no legitimate use for a knife or a ice pick in your vehicle, especially in the drivers reach.

To Eric, Yeah I am sure you are Ca. cop, but in your fantasy world it is also probably OK to impersonate cops. I live in California, I know how the law works. I guess that is why you see so many knives and ice picks on peoples dashboards.

The liberal lunatics in that state are probably offended with the thought of your natural right to self defense.

Their insanity is why the neighboring western state such as Oregon and Nevada do not want them to move there. It's like importing people with TB, Syphilis or the Plague.

Well, I see there are answers starting to appear that confirm what I've said.

Are Swiss Army Knives or multi-purpose tools legal there? What about screwdrivers - are carpenters going to be arrested?

Possession of deadly weapons is illegal in CA and must not be displayed publicly to avoid apprehension.
