You'll have the best time ever. I will actually be there for Christmas 2007 and New Years Eve. Definitely take a good winter jacket, thermal top, beanie, gloves as leaving an Australian summer to a freezing cold winter will be a shock. Check out the christmas windows, the christmas tree at Rockefeller Plaza, even ice skating there or in Central Park. Go to the top of The Rock (Rockefeller Plaza), the view is amazing. If you're going to have Christmas eve or Christmas dinner at a restaurant, look a booking a place in November. Maybe look into getting a New York City Pass, you get admission into the top attractions, save money and save time not having to line up. If you're into Ice Hockey or just sport, it's the right time of year to hopefully see the New York Rangers play at Madison Square Garden. Safety is not an issue and I felt safe walking around New York at night by myself, just use your common sense. Have a great time.

It'll be really cold so pack warm jackets, jeans, sweaters, etc. It's very safe in NYC, I went there 2 years ago and walked around by myself in Times Square at night. Go where there's a crowd, those places will be the safest. The streets are numbered so it's very hard to get lost there, so that's another big plus! For shopping, H&M is the best store! It's very affordable and they have really cute clothes. There's one on every corner!
I highly recommend going to see a play or musical while you're there. There's a half price ticket booth in the middle of Times Square selling day-of-performance cheap tickets. So go early and line up!
Christmas in NYC is gorgeous! Go check out the window displays at all the big department stores like Bloomingdales and Macy's. They're usually really special and nothing like you've seen before. There'll also be a huge Christmas tree at Rockefella Center that's all lit up.
New York is incredible during Christmas so it's a great time to visit!! Have fun!

well, while its summer in Australia in December, its winter in NYC in December so pack plenty of warm clothing and a good winter coat. Shopping in December will be very crowded and chaotic, so watch out for pickpockets (who love this time of year) and scams.

The tree at Rockefeller Center and the Lincoln Center will be up and there is ice skating at Wollman rink in Central Park (by the 59th street entrance) and in Rockefeller center. And the windows in the department stores, like Lord and Taylors and Macy, will have their Christmas decorations on display (always a big tourist attraction.)
