No. That is completely illegal and any employer can go to jail for that. I recomemend that you write a beautiful letter to the corporate office telling them that applied for a job for whatever date for the position of :________________.

Should they decided to deny you a right because of your health or that it is because of racial issues, then take that letter that they sent to you to a powerful lawyer anddwhy don't you kick some butts?

I do not think that any mental illness should hinder you from getting a good paying job.

Maybe, this is thinking out loud, the employers do not realize that the employees can find another job elsewhere where they are wanted.

I have a friend whom I have know for a long time and four years after we graduated high school, here in Mexico City, she opened up some shops that are of Interior Design. Before she was a unknown person now she is household name.

Legally, employer's can not turn you down for a job that you are qualified for because you have a mental illness. It is illegal and discrimination. I live in Texas too and sure you can sue a company for discrimination, but it is really tough to prove. I tried to sue my former employer for gender discrimination and sexual harassment but I didn't have enough proof even though I had 5 witnesses. No attorney would even take the case. Mental illness shouldn't hold you back from getting a job. Try calling some of the places that you have applied at and let them know that you are still really interested in working for their company. Most people don't do this so it will help set you apart from the rest. Good luck!

I can think of caseswhere illness can preclude someone form getting a job because it means that you can't perform the duties.

I see there's lots of talk about rights and the law and it's good you have laws to protect preople from discrimination and exploitation but ... you want a job - not a law suit.

Look if you've got a mental illness go to one of the employment support groups that sepecialise in helping people in your situation - they often have contacts in organisations and you can get a start that way. Once an employer sees that you illness is not an impediment to work you can move on.

You might have misinterpreted you prospective employers. You think you appeared "mentally slow" probably because you responded to questions taking your time, or your verbal expression was incoherent. This doesn't mean you have a mental illness of any sort.
You may find yourself in this type of situation if english is your second language. You mentally interprete sentences before you voice them out. This happens to all people learning a new language but does not make you less intelligent.
You may want to seek a job that requires little human interaction in english: teach Spanish, be an interpreter, find art works or home-based jobs working on computer, etc

1) Don't call it mental illness - this is a dynamism and people who don't understand mental illness are ignorant and think the worst because they are *&^&*^ idiots!

2) If the person is speaking with you tries to fob you off, say something like this: "With all due respect Samantha, you can't really tell a whole lot about me by looking at my resume or having such a quick chat on the phone - I'd like to come in a meet with yourself, when would be a good time for us to have a brief catch up?"

Good luck buddy!

How do you appear mentally slow? If you have a college degree then it would make no sense to label you as mentally challenged. Do you dress appropriately for interviews? Have all of the material they ask you to have for the interview? Is the real thing holding you back a lack of experience? It seems like you're not telling all of the story as it makes zero sense.

The collage degree should demonstrate that you have the basic capability of learning and achieving.
This may fall under the ADA .

not knowing what type of job you are seeking and educated in it is difficult to tell much more.
