I was reading Hadith and saw Haya. It mentioned it was a part of faith that included many concepts including modesty, but didn't give a real definition. Later I saw Haya' and didn't think it was the same, but again no explanation of what it is.

Thank you for your help.

Bismillahi Rahmani Rahim - In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

Hello. Haya does mean modestly, humility, shyness. There is a glottal stop at the end of the word (hamza in Arabic), like a catch when you're speaking, which is denoted by the apostrophe. Hayaa and Haya and Hayaa' are all the same word.

There is no direct translation for the word, but basically it means a shyness and modesty, not just before people but in front of Allah. This means a person with hayaa' is shy to do any act that would be displeasing to Allah. It also denotes modesty in dress and modesty in the way one carries himself. Hayaa' is a positive quality in both men and women.

May Allah guide you to that which is best in this world and the next. Ameen.

Fi Aman Allah,

Nancy Umm Abdel Hamid

Haya is modesty, in english word honour is used for this but it do not convey complete sence. It is self-respect, to keep honour, to keep and take care of respect of others, to avoid seeing others fault, to avoid disclosing others mistakes, to avoid using wrong language, to behave nicely with wormen, for women to avoid unnecessary company of other men ...... long list.
