All of the above, actually...in case of a major war (not an Iraq) the reserves can be called up to serve in the regular army. They are also called upon in peace time for things like natural disasters (hurricanes and the like) to police looting and such along with the National Guard.
You go to basic training and once a month train on a weekend. You get paid and you get certain benefits including some medical and educational assistance.
If you decide to go into the full time military at some stage you can also get credit for the time you have served in the reserves toward your active duty time.

1 Weekend a Month, 2 weeks in the summer. Also, you can't be a Combat Arm in the Reserves. (No Infantry Reserves) Although you can do that in the National Guard, I'm a 11b(Infantry) Guardsmen. U.S. Army

You are trained, then you are 'on call`
for a certain number of years.
There is a retraining active duty period,
usually two weeks every year and occasional meetings.
Otherwise you live a normal life, but you
can be called to active duty at short notice
should the need arise.
Your job is protected when you are
called up, you must be rehired on your return
with seniority and bebefits intact.

Troops trained by the Army, but who only serve one weekend per month to keep their skills up. Rest of the time, they are civilians working jobs.
Reason for this? It's cheaper than keeping them in active duty full time, and in emergency situations (such as a huge, huge war), it allows our Army to grow from 700,000 to 2,500,000 in a months time.
