I'm not a cop, but have been a dispatcher for over 20 yrs. It depends on a number of things. The location, how much education you have the field (such as your majoring in criminal justice), experience, your rank in the dept., etc. I know our officers make between $12-$14 hr., but we're in a small town. I know some officers in Topeka, Ks. that make $25-$27 hr., but they're a bigger town.

It all depends where you get hired. Most cops are in a union, who help negotiate the wages. The closer you are to a metropolitan area, the more you will start at. In MN, you will be at the top pay scale within 5 years, at the most. But again, top pay will typically depend upon whether or not you are near a major city. On the City's side of it, they will do wage comparisons with other cities that are near your city and cities that are comparable in size. You also have to see whether or not there are off-duty details available. Many businesses in larger cities hire off-duty cops to provide security and then your earning potential is only limited by your willingness to work.

My neighbor is a police officer. My husband wants to become one and was asking him questions a while ago. Turns out my husband makes more money in a year as a car salesman. My husband makes around $120,000 a year when the cop makes $64,000. Think about it, LOL. Take care, good luck, and stay safe.

It is "paid" not "payed"........... it varies quite widely depending on the area. Some small towns still pay barely above minimum wage, some large areas start at 40k+. It just depends.

Also, do NOT count on extra duty. In some states that's illegal because it represents conflict of interest. In states where it is a conflict of interest you would need to take extra training to be licensed as a security guard and work as a guard on the side.

You went to college to be a cop but you dont know what one gets payed yet? Harr! It varies from town to town, state to state. Check with the municipality or department you will most likely wanna work for.

Small towns equal low pay and minimal benefits.
They can't afford much.
Many cops use them as a stepping stone for two years then move on.
Have you considered the Border Patrol?
They're *DEFINATELY* hiring and you'd start out at about $35-$40k and excellent benefits and that's just to start.
Many seasoned BPO's make $80-$100k.
Beats the hell out of doing domestics at some trailer park!

Don't be a police officer for the money. We don't make a whole lot. Do it because you have a desire to help people. If you're in it for the money you are in it for all the wrong reasons!
