My mom is currently smoking a pack a day of "light" cigarettes and really wants to quit but she is addicted. I have heard really good things from a lot of people about a combination of Chantix/Support groups. Has anyone tried this drug and does it work and are there any really serious side effects?

Chantix is great! It silences the receptors in the brain that make you want to keep smoking. It not only stops the urge to smoke, after awhile you begin to hate the taste of cigarettes. But if you quit for awhile and then start again, all those receptors wake up again and you will be smoking just as much as before you quit. It costs $125 a month for the pills, so if you aren't serious, don't waste your money. I didn't notice any side affects. And support groups are a great way to keep on track.

Me and my husband started on chantix today. We are splitting a box for starters and if it seems to help in 2 weeks, it will be worth coming up with the money for another box. Try buying one box and splitting it to get a start. See if you notice a difference before investing. To the person who said it may make you irritable, that's what "stop smoking" does to you no matter what you take. My son in law went to a hypnotist and quit cold turkey with no problems a year ago, I would do that but I don't like people getting into my mind.

I quit after only 5 doses of Chantix, but finished the month-long course anyway, just to be on the safe side. That was in April, and I haven't touched a cigarette since.
I think it's a miracle drug. Time to buy stock in Pfizer!

Hmm... never heard of Chantix. My dad quit on Wellbutrin (buproprion) and hasn't smoked in 7+ years. The drug is listed as an anti-depressant, and that is its most common usage. Basically for him, it helped calm him when he wanted a craving. The first time he quit cold turkey with the support of the family and friends ... needless to say someone BOUGHT him a cigarette he was so miserable!
Good luck, hopefully your MD is discussing smoking cessation options with you.

I have seen many, many success stories due to this drug. Must be serious because it is expensive, but insurance might cover it. Call and check, some just need a prior authorization from the doctor's office. Might be able to get 3 months worth covered.

My cousin is currently taking this and she stopped smoking 3 weeks ago. She said she had NO cravings for cigarettes AT ALL.
