What you can do is a repair. It'll 'repair' Windows and you won't lose anything.

However, in some cases this doesn't fix extensive problems you may or may not have with your computer.

Follow this link to guide you through the Windows XP repair.

One fix may be...

Start
Run
Type command and hit enter
Then in the command window type SFC /scannow

This will check and replace corrupted files

If this doesn't work try System restore

If that doesn't work try to repair the installation

Some brands have a system backup feature built into the startup. If yours does try it (but make sure it's repair or Non-destructive)

To guarantee not losing your files back them up on an external HDD or flash drive.

The best way is to try a System Restore first. If that doesn't fix the problems, the next best way is to install over the current installation - do not delete the current Windows - that should fix most if not all errors (as windows always has something wrong...it is MS after all...)
