Fasting is forgoing something for a period of time.
Sometimes for religious reasons such as the practice of giving up a certain type of food or drink during Lent.
It can also refer to simply not eating or drinking. This can be a misguided attempt to lose weight. Some medical tests give more accurate results when the body has been without food or drink for 8 hours. Prior to surgery with general anesthetic one is asked to fast in order to prevent food be regurgitated and potentially sucked into the airway.

Fasting is a period of time that is longer than the usual spread between meals. Fasting is human and animal nature. We all fast and should take note of that. Sometimes fasting goes longer than 6-8 hours and can be mistaken for starvation. Fasting is to starving as water is to peroxide. They are similar but by far not the same. Fasting can be used to help take care of the body when done responsibly. Personally, it is nice to be able to go for more than a couple of hours without the mind being on food. Responsible fasting doesn't starve the body but it tames a feirce appetite while helping to stabilize insulin. By eating foods that stabilize insulin, you can have a healthy fast. A healthy fast is all about the food.

Fasting is most commonly associated with food, but occasionally you will hear of someone "fasting from television" or some other thing/activity. Often the thing/activity being fasted from is something that is significant to that person (e.g. I love pizza, so I might fast from pizza).
Fasting is beneficial in many ways. First of all, fasting for a Christian usually involves going without food to take time to pray. When you hear your stomach rumble, you remember that you are fasting and remember to pray. It is very effective in growing closer to Jesus Christ. Fasting for health may include weight loss. Other types of fasting (television... etc.) help in various ways. Often it helps to "step back" from something and get the big picture. It helps put life in perspective and shows you how much you depend on that item/habit.
I remember fasting for 2 days, at first I freaked out a little. I was use to looking around for food whenever I was hungry, one thing fasting taught me is how important food was to myself. I had made food more important in my life then it should have been.
Try fasting some time soon, and see what happens! Fasts don't have to be full (total giving up), it could be limiting (e.g. cutting down TV time).

Fasting is not eating or drinking for 24 hours straight.
Most religions use fasting to get into the habit of denying personal desires and cravings in favor of gaining personal faith. Some reliogions use fasting to emphasize to God their true desire and intent for Him to hear and answer their prayers.
For health reasons, some people fast if not once a week then once a month to allow the digestion to complete and empty out the bowels for a time period and give the digestion a rest. Supposedly this is good for preventing digestion problems in the future, but I'm not sure. (And with my irritable bowel syndrome, I am not the best example of such a theory!)
Either way, true fasting is an ability to learn self-control and deny yourself needs and desires for at least 24 hours (including sex!)
Plan to fast on a day and night when there is nothing else going on. Try to fast on a regular, boring day at the office. A good way to fast would be to go from breakfast one day to breakfast the next day. (I myself prefer lunch to lunch.) During the period of Ramadan, worshippers eat food before sunrise and after sunset of each day during the time period.
The first time fasting is always the hardest. You won't be alone in that.
Good luck in your trying. Sometimes strange things come from prayers accompanied by fasting...

People fast to develop a closer relationship with God. There are specific rules to it and everyone should not do it, you should consult your doctor first.

It is not eating. Jesus and Moses needed to do it. For benefits see site below with quotes from 18 MDs about it. Many are confused and scared of it.
