I feel kind of foolish asking this, but when a cookie recipe calls for softened margarine, does that mean I should melt the margarine before adding to the recipe? I am going to attempt to bake cookies tomorrow.

No, to soften a stick of butter for baking cookies, just place it on the counter about an hour before baking the cookies. It should be room temperature when you add it to the other ingredients. Melting the butter will change the consistency too much and will make your cookie dough too thin.

And don't feel foolish, at least you knew enough to ask first! Good luck with the cookies.

No, that would be melted margarine. Softened just means let it come to room temperature rather than hard like it first comes out of the fridge or freezer.

It's not a foolish question. I just put a recipe on a different question and debated how to say it! Make sure you don't get softened butter or margarine confused with the whipped stuff in the tubs!

I'm sure you'll enjoy your cookies tomorrow. Make sure you don't overbake them if you like chewy cookies!

As some one has already said, make sure you are not using the tub stuff and you are using the stick kind. Leave it out for a couple hours if at all possible. Try not to use the microwave at all. If you get it to warm the cookies will be really flat and spread out. Also you may ruin any eggs added to the recipe if the marg. is to hot or warm. I myself use good old butter at room temp. Hope all this advice is helpful. Good luck.

no don't melt it as the recipe won't turn out if you do. and make sure if it say's butter use butter as it also makes a difference. when they say soften butter it normally means leave it on the bench over night until it's soft to the touch, like margarine already is. so I'm not sure but i would think the same process would apply here.

Softened butter or oleo means for it to be at room temperature so that it is soft and spreadable.Take your margarine out a couple of hours before your baking begins.

Just leave it out of the fridge and it will melt by itself. It is easier to beat when it is soft!
