From my own experience with my two kids, I think the best time to switch to a toddler bed from the crib is when your child is able to crawl out of the crib anyway. Then its safer for them to get out of a toddler bed than to fall out of a crib. Unless you are pregnant and need the crib soon, just wait until your kid can climb out of the crib. By that age, the child will be able to comprehend that beds are for sleeping in and that the child won't be so young that they think they just can get up whenever they feel like it. Just a thought!

My daughter was more mature than my son. She was walking and talking before she was a year old so by the time she was 14 mos she was in a toddler bed. My son, on the other hand, is 18 mos old now and is most definitely NOT ready. He not only walks but he runs, jumps and climbs on everything. I have his mattress as low as it will go and I don't put anything big enough in his crib that could use to climb out.

My kids went from a crib to a full size single bed from around 12 months old. That said, the youngest stayed in the crib til he was about 18 months old.

We moved our children from a crib to a twin bed at age two. We placed the bed next to a wall and used a rail. You can find great ones that make it so safe. For their 2nd birthday, we buy them a bedroom set. We too skip the toddler bed and spend more $ on the twin bed. I feel that it is just one less transition that I did not have to make.

It depends on two things, does your child sleep in the crib or with you! if the child sleeps in the crib and has no problems climbing over it is time for a bed, if the child sleeps with you, you will have a hard time keeping them in the new bed, but most of mine were in there own beds at 3

My oldest daughter moved from a crib to a twin bed when she was 15 months old. (We added rails so she couldn't roll out.) She was totally happy to do it, and ready, and we had another baby on the way.
Our youngest daughter is 26 months and still in a crib. She's a climber and a wanderer, and she shares a room with her big sister. The only way to keep her safe would be to baby gate their door, and big sis can't open the gate to go potty during the night, if need be, so we're putting off the inevitable. I think we'll be making the move to a second twin bed pretty darn soon.

I switched both of my kids at around 18 months. My older one had to switch at about 16 months due to the impending birth of her brother, my younger one kept climbing out of his crib, so that is dangerous so he switched to the big bed.
Both moved directly into twin sized beds with a guard (you know that thing that helps them not roll out of bed at night). My daughter wouldn't stay in the toddler bed because it was so close to the ground she thought she could just get out (besides they take a crib matteres, so if I was going to have to buy everything I would rather just buy the twin so she can keep it until she moves out of my house). I didn't even bother with the toddler bed with my son, I learned my lesson the 1st time.

It depends on a variety of things. First of all, do you have or can you afford a bed for your little one? Do you have a little one who will stay in the bed?--you don't want to wake up and have your lilttle one roaming the house. Are you kicking out your little one for a new little one? (never make one baby not be a baby because another baby is on it's way)
Are you pushing your little one to grow up too quickly?
Is you little one going to freak out without the comfort of the crib? Does your little one still fit in the crib?
I rushed my oldest out at age 2 and he really wasn't ready. My second one I kept in the crib because I had another baby a year later and I had learned that I don't need to push a baby to grow up. WE bought a second crib. Baby number 3 stayed in the crib becaue we didn't have another bed ready for him. He started to climb out of it very really early so I never really knew where I might find him. Meanwhile my second one whom I let her still be a baby when her brother was born..well , we didn't have a bed so she stayed in the crib until she fit head to toe (around the age of 3 1/2). I then put my foot down and got her a bed.
Never push your baby to grow up too quickly. Know what your baby needs and is capable of doing. You are the parent...go with your gut feelings. Before you know it you turn around and you have a grandchild sleeping in that bed.
