College teaches critical thinking, and questioning of established principles. Religion doesn't stand up well to critical scrutiny. He's also afraid if all the young people leave, his income will drop substantially. Trust me, it has nothing to do with "sin and ruin." He's afraid he'll miss the next payment on his Cadillac.

Your pastor is correct. May college students believe that if a person has a Ph.D. and they are a college professor, that everything they say is true. Well, it's not!
Many of your professors, even at a religious college, will say that God does not exist and that the Bible is not true. I have had about 6 years of college classes and seen that a lot.
Also, some college professors will teach their students that there are only certain ways to think and then use that technique to teach that the Bible is not true.
If you take science classes, the professors will teach that the universe was created by evolution and that there is only matter and energy in the world. They laugh at the idea of God working miracles or that there are angels.
Many young people start to think that, surely, all of these highly educated people must know the truth and that the colleges would not let them lie to us. From this comes the thought that my parents and my pastor must be wrong or deluded.
That is how and why many young people who go to college lose their faith and ruin their lives. You will see the proof of what I say in many of the "answers" that were given before mine. There is nothing wrong with a college education, per see, as long as a young person knows ahead of time what they are in for.
They must know ahead of time what they are in for. Unfortunately many of the professors are deluded and are deceived by Satan. Others will outright lie to students because they don't want people to believe in God.
Unfortunately, it is now the case, that not only are many college professors deluded and liars but also, so is most of the broadcast media.
It will be extremely helpful for you when you go to college to make friends there with people who are true believing, Christians. I can't remember their names, but there are good Christian organizations on college campuses to help Christian students stand up to all of the lies they will hear there. They are also a place where a student can meet other Christian students and make friends.
Thank you for asking this important question and I thank God that it looks like you have a good pastor, although I think he should have explained his statement so that his concern could have been a little clearer.
God bless you. I assure you on my life and on my Salvation, that God, Jesus, and The Holy Spirit, are real and active in your life and that they love you more than it is possible for the human mind to understand. I have found in my 64 years, that there is no book and no person, more reliable or more helpful than the Bible. The people who say it isn't true are ignorant and/or deluded by the devil.

Its the battle of church and reason. Ever since the medevial period, the church has battled science. The church went up against Copernicus and Galileo in the 16th century for claiming the Earth rotated around the Sun. Now there is the Creationism-Evolution debate. A university represents the ultimate voice of reason, the place of high learning where God can be dissected and viewed with a microscope. And while many who believe will turn to atheism after college, others will come out with a new perception of God than will strengtehn their beliefs.

Who knows. Maybe you haven't been paying attention to his sermons?
My guess would be he perceives most college professors to be liberal in their thinking and opposed to Christian thought and teachings.
A naive child who has lived a sheltered life and has little experience dealing with a liberal world could be caught up in the awe of attending college for the first time and easily be persuaded to accept liberal thinking opposed to perceived Biblical truth.
Of course this is what will happen to you whether you attend college or not. Unless you are sent to a monastery somewhere completely removed from modern society you will be subjected to liberal thought anyway.
I guess it comes down to how well grounded an individual is in his/her Christian teachings.
I think the pastor is somewhat delusional in thinking a person cannot, or should not, move about in society on their own for fear "their minds will be poisoned" by liberal thought. He should be confident in what he has taught them over the years and pray for them if he has that burden.

I went to a University today to visit and what a mess. There were beer cans all over the yards, plastic cups with beer insignia all over them. You could tell there must have been a big party the day before on the campus. There were clothes on the lawns and crap everywhere.
Drinking leads to sin and ruin, and thats probably what your pastor is getting at.
I can also tell you when college starts, hospital ER's get busy because the teenagers cannot handle the parties and end up drunk and injured in the ER. They do everything from fall out of 10th story dorm room windows to fall off the front of moving cars and on and on and on...........One of my friends lost her son a year ago because he was horsing around on college campus drunk and his friend pulled a gun on him and shot him in the kitchen of his house. He stumbled out to the front lawn and died.

He probably doesn't mean all colleges- but many colleges and universities are filled with liberal professors who dismiss Christian beliefs and try to downplay Christianity. My own daughter, who was raised in a Christian home, studied music at a liberal university, and became very cold in her faith. She was taught critical thinking alright, but it was all biased away from religion. Once you turn away from Christian principles, it is easy to once again take up the ways of the world. I have watched a good Christian girl who lived a very good life turn away from the church, start drinking, gambling, and living selfishly as a result of her college influence. This is why it is very important if you want to maintain your faith to stay involved in Christian groups while on campus. Bad company with the wrong sort of folks will definitely corrupt your morals.

Because in college, the students can develop their brain and thinking skills. This may lead them to question about the validity of the bible and Christianity, and make them leave the flock of simple innocents.
Remember, the Fruit that caused the fall of Man was the Fruit of Knowledge. But given the chance, I would prefer to think for myself, rather than having some guy who is so indoctrinated and biased in something, to give me the big picture

Because your pastor believes that
* God doesn't want human beings to use their minds,
* knowledge of others will disturb love for God and God's children,
* knowledge of the universe will distract or harm love of the Creator,
* God loves ignorance over knowledge, and belief over learning and growth of understanding
* free will was more the Devil's creation than God's.

Your pastor errs. What's left in the 21st century for people without a college degree, or two, or three: this phrase should be learned early: "Do you want fries with that?"
