Everytime I shift down to third to brake with gear the check engine light turns on, but when I shift down to second it turns off. What do you think is happening?

Have you checked the levels of the engine and transmission oil?
I had a car that when low on oil and you took off all the oil would go to the back of the sump and the check engine light would turn on, and another that the check engine light would turn on when turning left with low oil.

There are many reasons for the Check Engine Light to come on. The first step is to check the ECU errors. If you go to a dealer they could do it, but will charge you an arm and a leg. If you take it to a shop, they will charge you either the arm or the leg. So your best bet is to figure out yourself first what code you have and see if is something you can fix yourself.

To check the codes, you need either to use a small paper clip to “jump” the ECU at the terminal Connector, or you need to access the ECU yourself and use a screw driver to activate the code reader.

There is a procedure on how to do all this. The paper clip option is good only if you know what you are doing, otherwise I recommend using the “normal” way which is at the ECU. Either way, you can find those procedures, how to read the codes and what each code mean at TwinTurbo.Net. They also have lots of info on how to troubleshoot most codes and what others have done in each case to solve them.

Go to twinturbo.net, click on the top on Pages, then on FAQ and then choose 300ZX FAQ. Most answers are there. You can also go to Pages and click on Tech for procedures and upgrades. Most documentation in there has pictures and have been done by hundreds of people including myself so you don’t have to worry about thinking if anything there is right or not. Believe me, if is there, is good information.

Just make sure not to start posting there about your problem as they will jump over you like maniacs and will more likely insult you and tell you to go to FAQ pages before posting a question that has been posted a million times.

Good luck. And see below for the links.

I am going to reccomend getting the codes read. Most likely throttle posistion sensor or something shorting like an oxygen sensor. Nissan Dealers and independant shops with Snap-On Sacn tool with asian scanner card.
