My dog is about 15, and she's a small mutt. For some reason she likes to lick metal things... like the vents on the floor and our weight lifting barbells. Weird, eh? Does anyone know why she would do this? Thanks!

My mom makes dog food for our dogs. She normally cooks a whole chicken in a pot all day, then adds oats and rice and vegetables. Then we mix that with water and regular dry dog food, heat it up in the microwave, and add special minerals and cod fish oil from the Health Food Store.

Hmm, that's a new one. Could be a mineral deficiency of some sort. You could try switching to a better food and see if it stops.

I have a Chow German Shepard cross... Zora has licked metal since she was 8 weeks old and this is her 15th year on the planet.. She is in age appropriate health and has never gotten sick from licking metal objects.. the claws on the ball and claw table legs are metal.. really old metal and, there are keys and numerous other items.. I have always wondered {the vet could never really give an answer} why, until I read all your answers and find this is more common that I thought... Zora eats good and balanced.. ya know some of my food, some of her food and she is a truly great dog.. { I know, we all says that about our dogs.. but hey, what can I say} and soooo... if anyone clues into this.. please post an answer... Oh by the way, her food is pretty much organic.. and so is mine.. no GMOs no weird product fillers.. ya know, stuff like that.. So, it is not her diet or allergies... Blessings and Peace :)

Hah, thats kinda funny, mostly because dogs usually HATE the taste of metal. Now granted, dogs lick objects that don't have much of a smell (metal obviously) to give them a better smell of the object. I don't think you dog has any sort of problem, hes just curious about the metal.

Our dog started licking weird things all of a sudden - door frames, desks, metal filing cabinet, tile on the bathroom walls, etc. The vet said it could be a sign of a new allergy. We ended up getting him a lamb & rice diet and the licking stopped. Not sure if it's that simple in your case, but sometimes diet - or anxiety - is the cause. I would ask your vet - most times they will answer for FREE over the phone.

SCIENCE DIET is NOT good for dogs... don't listen to that. It has been pr oven feeding your sense able human food is better than almost 85% of all dog foods. Search the internet, and look for dog food with no by-products or fillers. Check the ingredients, if yellow corn is on there, it isn't good quality. Also don't read by how much protein is in the dog foods. Most HIGH PROTEIN dog foods are high in protein because things like hair are mixed into the dog food... its high protein but not good protein. Look on the ingredients and if you see whole ingredients, like words you can actually read... like certain vegetables and fruits, then its good. I use Nature's Recipe... and my dogs love it. Their coats are shinny, they have lots of energy, they don't eat as much, and they are all around better.

my dog is doing it NOW,she has done it since she was 5wks old and she is now 10yrs old,she scratches round+round+then licks.its the fridge, oven, wash machine+dryer, the metal sides.it drives me crazy.she already is on chicken diet has been for couple yrs,vet said anxiety, but iam home all the time, and have a family of 4 kids and 4 other dogs.she was 1st until i got another dog when she was 1yr oldso its not bcose of being alone or stressing with other dogs.its best to try put a stop to it by telling her STOP,and move her away from the object of her licking.she will associate the no to the action.good luck,my dog is now on the lounge asleep.she does it alot when i have visitors too.does yours?

It often means it is not getting enough nutrients in her diet. What type of food does she eat? Make sure you feed her a high-quality food from the pet store like Science Diet or Wellness.
