As far as I can track it, it seems to be an outgrowth of the person daimon, a kind of attending spirit, within Hellenic religion.

It came from Hebrews 1:14. "Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?" We draw a portrait of ways in which angels have served God's people in the past from these Scriptures:
-Agents of revelation, communicating God's word: Daniel 7:16; Zecharia 1:0; Acts 7:53; Hebrews 2:2.

-Angels protecting God's people from enemies: 2 Kings 6:15-17; Matthew 13:30, 49-50; 2 Thess. 1: 7-9.

-Guarding children: Matthew 18:10

It seems likely from these scriptures, that part of God's protective shield around you and me is made up of these powerful beings who are committed to do God's will and are determined to serve his saints. Hope this helped.

I think it is a concept that has been around for at least three and half thousand years. Many differant cultures have some form of "guardian angles/spirits" in their mythology/beliefs. Where the idea first came from, who knows? It's probably too old and too general of a concept to have a record of who/when/where it first originated.

It is mentioned in the Bible. An Angel was assigned to guard the nation of Israel against Satan and other evil forces.
