I hate to disagree with everyone, but facts are facts and I'm including the links to back it up.
They had 200 with the 2 bar, 225 with 4 bar and 271 hp K code HiPo and the Shelby GT350 had 306 hp using a modified K code HiPo.These are all factory horsepower ratings for the 67 289 cu in engine.
There was even one sold with the 289 K code and Paxton supercharger rated at 390 hp!
These were all gross hp readings from the factory

the main and least difficult "upward thrust up and pass" you should purchase is a metamorphosis of rear end gears. If the motor vehicle nonetheless has that's unique gears in it they are probable 2.75 or 3.00 ratio.you will do lots greater useful with a three.25 or 3.50 kit set.they are ordinary to put in and you will think of you have have been given a clean engine.that's the suited thank you to get what you decide on.yet remember the decrease gears like 3.25 and 3.50 will use greater gas except you have a popular overdrive tranny interior the motor vehicle.you could verify what gears you have on the drivers door guarantee plate that's going to tutor a code.you could verify any e book on Mustangs or the Mustang club on line to be certain the code and what gears got here interior the motor vehicle initially. If the guaranty plate is long previous or you do not have the unique drivers door you could continuously get under the motor vehicle and verify the rear end your self. There must be a metallic tag on between the bolts which carry the gears in place, those face the driveshaft. it could have the kit ratio stamped on that's final analysis, look close they are frequently coated with grease and dirt and can be annoying to become attentive to.

the 289 in 1967 was a very strong dependable engine, however it never came close to 289 hp. 1 hp per cubic inch is the holy grail of engines, few factory prepared engines have attained this. your engine when new, was closer to 175 hp.....sorry, but it can be built to 250 hp easily

Like SVOman said, gross factory hp ratings, that also came from the same people that rated a Ford 427 2-4barrel at 425hp... Dynotested along the lines of 625hp out of the box. Chevy L88 only dynoed 550hp out of the box. A 426 hemi was rated 425hp and dynoed in its street dressing has more like 825hp... They were staying to the low side back then to avoid insurance companies from torturing the future owners of these engines...
