I'm taking World Civ and I came across this quote:

"Some time afterward, God put Abraham to the test. He said to him, “Abraham,” and he answered, “Here I am.” And He said, “Take your son, your favored one, Isaac, whom you love, and go the land of Moriah, and offer him there as burnt offering on one of the heights that I will point out to you.”
(Genesis, 22:1-2)

What does this mean???

Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Levi, Kohath, Amram and his sons Arron and Moses.

Isaac was going to be heir to the Promised Land covenant, he was age 25 and how could that be if he died, Abraham was confident that God could make him alive again [ also for them, God has got to give his son Jesus John 3:13-17 ]; So Abraham trusted God and God trusted Abraham and this
trust had to go into generation four Gen.15:13,16 [ Exo.6:16-23.26 it did ].

Heb.11:17 By faith Abraham, when he was tried, offered up Isaac: and he that had received the promises offered up his only begotten son,
11:18 Of whom it was said, That in Isaac shall thy seed be called:
11:19 Accounting that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead; from whence also he received him in a figure.
So Abraham age 75, [ surrounded by land pirates and lawlessness ], 427 years after the flood [ year 1656 ], gets the Promised Land covenant, Isaac is born when he is age 100 Gen,21:5; and Jacob is born when Isaa is age 60, Jacob is in Egypt at age 130 Gen.47:9;
He dies 17 year later Gen.47:28; His son Joseph dies in 53 years Gen.50:26;
712 years after the flood. Moses is born 777 years after the flood and is age 80 Exo.7:7; 430 years after Abraham was age 75, Exo.12:40,41; Gal.3:16-18;
857 years after the flood, The Promised Land heirs get the law of the land and the laws of God in the next 40 years 897 years after the flood, Josh.5:6,10,12; 14th day New Year at 898 years after the flood and all has been done as Abraham's Family and the land pirates face the law enforcement people.

God had promised to bless Abraham through Isaac. Abraham had to trust God to still fulfill that promise even if he offered him up. Abraham further told Isaac that God would provide the sacrifice and he did with a ram. The mountain God led Abraham and Isaac to is supposed to be the same mountain that Jesus was later to be crucified on.

If you read further, you will see that God stopped Abraham from the sacrifice. God wanted to test Abraham. Of course, God knew Abraham would "pass", but Abraham also needed to learn of his own capacity to obey God. The interesting thing is also that Abraham said that God would provide the sacrifice - so Abraham was willing to go as far as possibly accepting that Isaac might be that provided sacrifice, but indeed, God did provide a proper sacrifice.

There is the quick version.

God wanted Abraham to introduce the first bar bar que joint!

The Christian God was testing Abraham's belief in him by telling him that he was to go and sacrifice his favorite son. Nice God, huh?

This was a test of Abraham as to his total faith in God. God was never going to have him sacrafice Isaac, but he test Abraham to see if he would obey by faith. Isaac was the PROMISED child to Abraham and Sarah his wife. Though he was 2nd born to Abraham, he was not the promised child. Abraham had a child with Sarah's maidservant Hagar, at the request of Sarah, because she and Abraham lost faith in God's promise of a son and tried to quench their desire for an heir by themsleves, not trusting God's promise to deliver one to them.

well, the "what does this mean" is a bit broad -- you are using a somewhat inaccurate English translation which tells of god's charge to Abraham to bind his son as an offering.
