Dogs from pet stores are rarely healthy.
Please skip this dog in favor of a shelter puppy. At the very least, go to a breeder. You will find better quality, healthier dogs than anything at a pet store.
As for your father, well, maybe you could "work off" the money with chores, or something. Shelter dogs are less than 100 dollars. That's a big savings right there, maybe he won't need to put in any money. They also come with lots of "extras", that will save your folks lots of money. Something to think about.

You shouldn't buy a dog from a pet shop, as I'm sure other people will tell you, you should go to your local dog shelter and they will likely have puppies/the certain breed you want, if not now, in the near future, and you would be saving it's life, plus it will cost no more than just over $200, and that money would be going to it's vet bills from being vaccinated/sterilized.
But, to not be an annoying not-anwsering-your-question-y person, for your dad, $200 wouldn't be as dramatic as you are assuming ("imagine how long you have to work to get all that money back"), because your dad probably makes at least $500 a week. Also, how come your mum and dad have separate moneys? Don't parents usually have one bank account? Anyway, your mum sounds like she really wants the dog, so you should focus on persuading her of how much she wants it, and she might either give in and buy it all herself, or be able to persuade your dad herself.

first, you might want to make sure that your current dog is not dog aggressive. a lot of people have the same idea as you and then they come home with a new puppy and the first dog is jealous, or territorial. either way, they don't get along very well. secondly, if you're going to get a dog, don't get one from a pet shop. i'm not saying it's not a good dog, but most likely the pet shop owner wasn't the owner of the puppy's parents, so you have no idea what the ancestory of the dog was like, like if the dad was aggressive and the mother was skittish. if you're going to pay that much for a dog, get one from a breeder who has a relationship with the dam and sire, and can tell you the personalities of the pups. finally, your dad might be more willing to pitch in that much money if you've researched a particular breed, and you want a puppy as such. he'll feel better about spending his money on something you're educated about, and maybe is ready to handle.

I think buying any pet from a pet shop is a bad idea. Dogs that come from pet shops can have a lot of problems. If you really want another dog, go to a rescue center. You will pay less and the dog will in most cases love your family more because you gave it a good home. I did that and I have the sweetest loving dog.

Andrea: I applaud you for wanting to get your dog a buddy! It is so important for them to have a pack, especially if they're home alone sometimes.
I would recommend taking this opportunity to save a life. If you go to your local animal shelter or to a dog adoption you can find a wonderful dog that's perfectly suited in mentality to your dog and your family!
You'll still have to pay for it, because the money is used to make the animal current on its vaccinations and get it neutered, but it won't cost as much and you will have a much healthier animal.
Besides, I'll bet your other dog wouldn't care how much his new brother or sister cost! Good luck!

rescue a dog from a shelter.and having another dog doesnt always make having 2 dogs not lonely.its more responsibilty.puppys require lots of time, and it maybe the wrong decision to get another dog now.spend the money on the dog you have and go join a dog club and enjoy sometime with the dog you have.especially if no-one is home enuf now.goodluck.but go to a shelter 1st,they have plenty of dogs that would love companions now and dont cost as much.

PLEASE DO NOT BUY A DOG FROM A PET STORE. Despite what the employees say, these dogs are bred at puppymills and their parents live in inhumane conditions. See this video
http://youtube.com/watch?v=A3P0HXRmfKg
Dogs bought from pet stores are not bred responsibly so the likelihood of them getting genetic disorders is a lot higher than if you buy one from a reputable breeder.
Plus, the cost of one from a pet store is a lot higher than one from a reputable breeder.
Have you considered giving a rescued dog a loving home? You can contact your local humane society or a rescue organization.
PLEASE don't buy that dog in the pet store. They will just breed more to fill his place and the puppymill horrors will continue. PLEASE.

before you buy a dog in a pet shop, do a yahoo search on puppy mills -- because, unless the pet shop got the puppy from a private person, the rest of their pups come from puppy mills.
these are crowded, inhumane places, and many of the puppies which come from them are not that healthy and some tend to have chronic problems later in life.
it's sad but true.
i don't know how to convince your dad... but maybe consider a pup from somewhere else.
take care.

Please, don't purchase an overpriced pup from a pet shop.
Have your mom take you to the local animal shelter, and you can pick out a pup that will have already had it's shots, been wormed and will come with a neuter/spay certificate if it hasn't been already done.
The pup's there are just waiting for homes, and unfortunately only have a limited time there until they are put down. You would be saving a life!
Then you can use that extra money to buy it lots of toys and get it a nice bed.

Don't support backyard, unethical, and breeders for profit by purchasing a puppy at a petstore. Many are sickly and come with a host of problems.
Perhaps it would be easier to convince your dad to adopt a dog from the shelter - only costs about 100.00 for a puppy a lot of places.
BUT - it doesn't really sound like you all have time to train and deal with a puppy - by your own admittance, no one is home - puppies are like babies - they need someone at home with them and they need to be trained. Spending time and training two dogs is twice as much work!
