Hi! I recently bought the Very Hungry Caterpillar bedding for my toddler son's room. Its adorable! Problem is I can't find any corresponding wall art to decorate the rest of his room with. The artwork itself seems a very simple design, and while I could probably freehand the caterpillar and butterfly on his walls, I'm a bit scared to do anything so permanent. Any ideas on how to create a large caterpillar and medium butterfly using easy to find materials? Felt, tissue paper, whatever. I welcome your ideas and concepts! You could really have a lot of fun, incorporating the food, the sun, etc... found in the book!

Here's a link to the bedding itself:

Thanks people!!!

As a muralist I would love to do a room like that! You however are not a muralist and want to find something less permanent than going crazy with paint...You could use felt from a fabric store, but if you go with felt treat it with hairspray or a flower preserver to keep it looking fresh longer. I would paint it though..lol..it could be fun...Practice on some large pieces of cardboard...I am even thinking using a large circle sponge to do it would really help you and boost your confidence. You could use that to do the main body of the work and the small details would not be so daunting. When you sponge paint make sure you dab the sponge a few times before applying - You don't want too much paint on it - Just enough to cover the area. Good Luck and Great Idea..
The foam idea is good..but temporary..I used to teach art classes with the stuff and it will warp easily. If any moisture is in the room etc..it will warp..and considering you may be using a humidifier at some point..Go with paint.

Your idea about using felt sounds good.

I assume you have already considered the valance curtains in the catalog.

I would suggest matching the colors, either by painting the walls or by painting the trim (probably the easier of the two) and using felt to do the caterpillar and butterfly shapes. You could also look for color photos of actual caterpillars or butterflies and do macrame or framed photos if you think the effect would be nice.

I think I would stay away from painted designs. You might also check teacher supply stores for some of the shapes you are looking for.

Sounds like a fun project! Good luck!

I think I would freehand it onto posterboard with bright acrylic paints and then frame them with the cheaper type of large poster frames that you can find in Michaels craft stores or AC Moore craft stores - that way when he outgrows it you can just take them down and frame something new. If you don't want to use paints you could probably even use fabric to make the caterpillar and Butterfly on the posterboard and frame them - and I also really like the large sunshine for a decoration..

Easiest - - Go to fabric store and look at material in the 'calico' print section. Find cut outs or whole pieces you like. You can decapage (found in craft store) the material onto wall. Or put prints into picture frames.

You could cut plywood circles out and paint them or cover them in padding and material that matches the colors in the bedding. If you choose to hang this on the wall, I would make it useable as well by installing "feet" out of coat hooks to hang items on. Have fun!

I would get a large peice of foam cut it into the skape of a catapiller and paint onto that.
Have it wind around the room.

Here's a border. You can do a lot with this, including mounting it 1/3 up the wall to separate top and bottom colors, or cut the squares to frame them.

Or perhaps something like this:

Did you check for the Eric Carle accessories, either on ebay or amazon? I just purchased the Eric Carle animal safari set for my daughter's room. They had other pillows, border, etc.
I also saw stuff on overstock.com.
